It's been a good while since I changed one out, but it seems to me it wasn't complicated or I wouldn't have done it.
So my guess is they are just twist together connections because where they usually stick them it would have been next to impossible to get much of the way of tools in there. I hear you on the feely part.
I'm sure someone else will chime in with exactly what the connections are. If you're going to replace it with another breaker instead of just some generic coupling to attach the two pieces of PEX together, make sure you look at it when you take it out (before turning it around and all) to see which way to put the new one back in.
