Portable Jump Starter

I am going to get a Portable power station jump starter. I want a good one. What I've looked at they have different amp, like 500, 700, 1000, etc.. How many amps would I need to turn over a diesel? Mine is a Ford 6.7. What suggestions do you have? Thanks

My only question would be why? Your truck most likely came equipped with TWO batteries with a cranking average somewhere around 800 or more amps for EACH battery.

WHY? I travel with an RV often. If I had a problem I'd want to take care of it. I suppose I'm a little paranoid. I just like to be prepared. Also getting way up in years, these things cross my mind. That's the only answer I have.

Sandy we are all getting there...now, or later. I'm thinking carrying a jump starter is, in my thinking, trying to take measures for a cure that prevention (good batteries/testing/maintenance) will eliminate. Forget the jump starter and drop in some good batteries, check/maintain and replace. Getting stranded because those things aren't done are a real PITA.

I would get the highest rated jump box you can get. Diesel engines require some serious amps to turn the starter against 400+ PSI cylinder pressure.

Agree with everybody. I got new batteries, I'm OCD about maintenance and up keep, and, as I said before, I'm old. I'm still going to get a new jump starter, just which one, I don't know. Thanks guys.

I'm with you. I've got multiple multiples of things because I don't want a failure of anything, anytime. But....A&M? Here I am backing the black and red (TT). Good luck on the jump starter.

Sandy,

Check the first two boost/starters on this link: https://anewwayforward.org/best-jump...er-for-diesel/ They are the only ones I've found on Amazon.com that are rated for a diesel engine above 6.5 liters in size. Our 6.7L engines will work with the first couple, then the "engine size recommendations" fall off below our cubic inch size diesels.

One is $300 the other $90, so take your pick and remember you may not always get what you pay for, on the other hand, you do usually get what you pay for.... It's a "buyer beware" for sure.....

Understand but it's difficult to plan for every contingency. With most modern vehicles dead batteries aren't nearly the issue as they were in days gone by. It used to be if you left your lights on or a door open too long, or plated the radio for hours you'd end up with a dead battery. Those days went away along with to 27 Amp alternators.

Now everything pretty much on a timer and trucks have well over 100 Amp alternators. I carry a heavy duty 20' long jumper cables. We only stay in campgrounds but let's say I stop for fuel and the batteries won't crank. Well then I'd pull the camper battery out and use it to jump start the truck. My theory is if the batteries "suddenly went dead" than I've got an issue that's more involved than just the dead battery.

sourdough, My daughter went to TT. She claimed one Aggie in the family is enough.

flybouy, You make a good point. Never thought about using the RV battery. I too have some really good jumper cables. Another one of those paranoid things.

I have the GB 70 for work, they are a lot lighter than the last jump starter I had. Look for reviews, do some home work. Seem reasonably priced.

Good luck

Biggest you can get!
Years ago when the batteries in our 2001 Ram started to fail I came home from a 5 day trip to dead batteries at the airport parking lot, they sent a little Ford Ranger took about 20 minutes before it gave enough of a charge to start the engine. Keep in mind this was with mechanical injectors and a an electrolyte/mechanical pump engine only needed to make one rev to start.

I had an issue at an overnight stop recently in a rest area. I'm already planning to replace the batteries in the trailer as they don't hold a charge as long as before, and after just one night of using the lights, fans, and fridge while sleeping they are low.

What I didn't think about is that my Ram has the 7-pin power plug always on, so the truck batteries were trying to keep the trailer batteries changed all night. I wasn't pleased when the truck wouldn't start the next morning.

Fortunately someone who was standing outside their car nearby just happened to have one of those boosters, and after hooking it up I was immediately able to turn over the diesel. New batteries already in the truck, two new 6V batteries in the trailer soon, and I'm pretty sure I won't forget to unplug the trailer from the truck any time I'm stopping for more than a few hours from now on. Even with the new batteries, I'm thinking about getting a booster just for peace of mind when on the road.
