Super Duty Tailgate
If you have a 2017, you may want to be aware of this:
https://www.autoblog.com/2018/10/18/...uty-tailgates/
The TSB referenced is most likely this one: TSB ID: tsb17-2196

I have heard of this, but skeptical myself. I would guess that the driver accidentily presses the key fob or more than likely the release button just below the lights. Pretty sad when only a couple unverified incidents forces a manufacturer to spend millions. Dr. Ford ring a bell?!

This comment from the end of the article - ouch! I thought a tailgate opening on my own trailer would be bad enough, but randomly opening and damaging someone else’s car? Double Ouch to explain that to your insurance and the other owner.
“This has been happening on the 4th gen Rams for years going back to 2013. My 2017 ram had this happen when I was parked at the grocery store. I had backed into my spot. When I closed the door the tailgate dropped and smashed the hood of the Chevy impala behind me. It’s happened while parked and while going down the road. Fiat Chrysler has failed to do anything about it.”

I don't think there is an electonic tailgate on my 96 F250. Why would someone want a key fob operated tailgate? Do the electronics lock/unlock or does the thing come down on its own? No wonder super duty Fords now cost more than a house!

There is an active recall and fix for the RAM tailgate issue. If you haven't received your notice by Mail, contact your dealer.

Lynette does not have a ram or the issue with a Ram. She quoted one of the comments from the article. Deflecting that Ford might have an issue by saying ram has an issue. Wait till GM has an issue with that new fandangled tailgate. There I did it too.

Lynette's statement "Fiat Chrysler has failed to do anything about it.” prompted me to correct the statement as FCA has addressed the issue and are making corrections. Do you want me to post my recall notice?

Frank,
What you are referencing is not a statement from Lynette. Rather she quoted a comment a reader of the article made lower down on the webpage. Here is what she was referencing:
“Mike” may need a copy of the recall notice.

I stand corrected, My apologies to Lynette. Yes, she was quoting from the article. The quote from the article needed correcting as FCA has addressed the issue with the auto locking tailgate.

This is veering a bit off topic, but watch the video clip here
https://www.torquenews.com/4147/prev...silverado-1500
to see a quick and cheap extra bit of protection against tail gate theft. I had no idea tail gate theft was a current issue (and so expensive to replace) until I bought an F-250 with a lockable release handle and commented to someone who was in the know.

A tailgate for a SuperDuty starts around $1800 and can go over $3000 for a platinum model with camera and step. All it takes to "steal one" is to open it partially, lift the passenger's side off the hinge, pull it slightly away from the driver's side, lift it up and walk away. If it has a camera, it'll take about 15 seconds longer to reach under the bumper and disconnect the camera plug.
There are several locks on the market that lock the passenger's side hinge so it can't be lifted. The one I have is a Master lock. It's been on three trucks so far, my 2010 F150, 2013 F250 and the current 2015 F250.
Around south Texas, near the border, tailgates come up missing all the time, at least that's what we were told in 2011 when we wintered in south Texas. I bought the lock and so far, have not lost a tailgate.
To me, it's $15 well spent, YMMV

How tightly does the 8253 fit on the F250 tailgate "cup"? Reviews on some trucks other than Ford suggest that it is lose enough to still get the tailgate off.

It fit my 2010 F150, 2013 XLT and fits my 2015 Lariat tail gate just great. I did put a strip of Velcro on the side of the lock and on the edge of the tail light/fender molding so the lock doesn't rattle. If there's a problem with it being "too loose" it doesn't affect my truck or the previous two...

I've been putting the hose/band clamp on my tailgates for almost 25 years, quick, easy & cheap.

Whatever you got, drive it like you stole it and are happy with your felony. That's the way to do it.

Super Duty???
I haven’t had issues with my 2017 F350 Super Duty Platinum tailgate opening while driving but, I did have an issue a month ago when we were hitching up the fifth wheel for a trip. The tailgate wouldn’t open (it’s electric only-no lever or mechanical latch-just a button). Had to wait until Monday morning to take it to the dealer and parts had to be ordered. Didn’t get it back until Wednesday afternoon. Five days late leaving because the tailgate wouldn’t open. So much for “SUPER DUTY”!!! Seems like Ford could put some sort of manual secondary latch in the event this happens. Couldn’t use the truck for five days all because the tailgate wouldn’t open...STUPID!!!

Can we all assume there were no rocket surgeons or brain scientists around to simply Google "manual override Ford tailgate?"
