AC maintenance

As summer is approaching and I'll be using the AC is there anything I should be checking/cleaning before I fire it up?

I never have. Maybe once a yr check the filter.

Not much besides cleaning the filter. You might go up and take the cover off and clean the coils if you feel energetic. While you are there check the shaft and couplings on the blower and if there is a cup with a little flip cap, that's for lube so if it has it put in a couple of drops of motor oil.

Aside from cleaning the filter on a regular basis, I do two things:
1) using a vacuum with a brush attachment vacuum out the plenum
2) Annually, Remove shroud on roof and hose out the coil and fins to remove any accumulated organic material (algae, rotted leaves, bees nests, etc and make sure condensate water is draining pproperly. You would be amazed what comes out.
