"Thanks for all the great advice! I really appreciate it. Now that my 5th wheel hopes are dwindling, I'm looking at a small 5er or a larger TT with multiple slides. My current TT has one slide....sooooo, how much is too much tongue weight on a TT? I will be using a weight distributing hitch.
To determine "too" much tongue weight you have to crunch the numbers just like a 5th wheel. Your payload is still your payload.
I have a TT that has a gvw of 10,000lbs and a tongue weight of 1100 lbs. You should be OK with something like that. It also has 3 slides...but, it's really made for 2 people which is what we wanted. You might also look at the Keystone Cougar line of light weight 5th wheels. I think there are some that have pin weights in the 1200lb range or so (memory) and you might be able to make one of those work.....but it could be really close. Obviously a weight distributing hitch with sway control will be a must for good towing.

Honestly a 32-34' fiver with a 12-1400 lb pin weight would tow ten times better then any 35' foot TTYL with an 1100lb tongue weight. Fifth wheels tow so much better and offer more storage. I go fifth wheel even if you were over a couple hundred pounds on the pin.

I have a 2003 Montana which 14000 loaded but I have yet to hit that number. I don't load a bunch of stuff I don't need. If I don't use it out it goes. I took it to the scales and the numbers didn't match up like I thought. I was light on the 5er and heavy on the truck. I usually have a full load of water in case I need it. If you dont fill it up the water sloshes around and could brake the tank. I was well under my GCVW.

This information includes some "Ford magic" if you look closely. It lists the "curb weight" (front 2056/rear 2858) as 6914. With a GVW of 10000, that's a "payload rating" of 3086. If you consider they list the "fifth wheel hitch" at Max 2975, that leaves 111 pounds for your passsengers and other cargo. If your DW weighs 150 pounds and you weigh 200 pounds, even with zero other cargo, the max hitch weight would be 2875, but then you have to deduct the weight of your fifth wheel hitch from the max pin weight, so really, with 350 pounds of people and a 150 pound fifth wheel hitch, the max is closer to 2725.
Most of the "advertising" will give you so much "mixed information" that it's really difficult to tell what you can actually haul. They say the "max trailer is 12000 pounds, but the GCWR is 19000, so if you've got cargo and your truck is "at the GVW of 10000, the max trailer (before you exceed the 19000) would be 9000. So, you've got to take most of what's "advertised" as "not inclusively accurate" or, with some claims, you can call it simply "BS" <blush>
Remember also, the figures listed by Ford are the "standard build Lariat 172" wheelbase". If you add the FX4 package, it weighs about 150 pounds, the "lariat ultimate package weighs about 300 pounds, heated/cooled seats add about 45 pounds, sunroof adds about 50 pounds, 20" wheels add about 40 pounds, etc. So any options must be added to the curb weight and deducted from the payload, max trailer, or max fifth wheel capability.

John is correct on all his points. Thats why you need to go th the sticker on the inside of the door for the truck you want and not the website. The website is just a guide and not gospel.

What you are finding out is why I skipped the 3/4t and went to 3500 srw. Fifths, especially toy haulers, have a lot of pin weight and eat up payload capacity on the truck quickly.

Salesmen will try to sell bottled water to a drowning man
Just went to the Tampa RV show a few weeks ago when RV'ing(yeah) in Florida, and looked at many different models. Since owning a TT beyond my vehicles capacity many years ago, and regretting the towing experience, I always check the weight ratings on the RV's I look at. My wife was always wondering why I wandered around to the drivers side front of the RV, and I had to show her the weight placard for the RV.
At the Tampa show, looked at one fifthwheel, and noted the GVWR was about 2500 pounds more the the towing capacity of my truck. Made the quick mental note the RV was over my TV, and started to walk away, "WHOA", ran into the salesman.... Told him my TV capacity was a deal breaker, and tried to walk away, and he launches in to this story that that is based on carrying 3000 pounds of 'stuff', and we'd never do that, and a full suitcase of clothes only weights about 50 pounds. As we all know, RV'ing isn't just clothes, it's carrying everything from dishes, food, lawn chairs, cookware, etc., plus propane/battery/supplies to live on for the duration of our trips.
Yeah, you can tow that with your truck. It probably would, and wouldn't be terrible, but you know limits are there for a reason.

If you're truly wedded to your truck and a fifth wheel, check out the Starcraft AR-One Maxx. It certainly isn't a high-end unit, but they quality looked decent and the advertised pin weight is 1200lbs.

Even a 1200# DRY pin weight will be above many 1/2 ton capacities and that includes nothing in the 5er and nothing but a 150# driver in the TV, not even the hitch. The GVRW will be at or slightly over max of most half tons.
