Joined the US Navy after high school in the Nuclear Power Program as an Electrician's Mate. Got married during this training and failed out of the Nuclear side. Served onboard four ships and two shore duty assignments, retired after 22 years of service because I couldn't stay within the weight standards. Started my second career as an industrial electrician and electronic instrumentation technician. During this time I started volunteering as a firefighter and even completed my two year electronics degree. Currently working in tire manufacturing, figuring on retiring when I feel that the time is right. DW is still with me after 41 years, works in retail and is coming up on her company's retirement package #2, still not sure if she wants to or not.

Interesting thread!! My first "job" as a kid was at an old fashioned Chev-Olds/John Deere dealership in my home town. At 17, I worked my widowed mother's farm, bought my own, and farmed for 10 yrs. Booze had me down, quit drinking altogether, sold my farm. Started a farm tractor salvage yard, did that successfully for 20 years. At age 47, joined the RCMP, trained with all the 22 yr. olds and graduated at age 47. Worked as a regular member for 12 1/2 years, "retired" and went back to work for the RCMP as a Reservist, working pretty much full time filling in at short-handed detachments all over Saskatchewan.

While working as a Reservist, I started running a big combine for people near my home town. Worked as a Reservist for 5 years and retired at 65. Now I work Spring and Fall for that big farm, running tractors and combining. I love running that million dollar equipment and also love getting paid to do that! I am 72 now and can't wait for Spring.

Just celebrated 46 years of sobriety!

Picked up hay bales in my teens. Started maintaining and modifying material handling equipment then supervised the crew doing this work. Got into engineering doing the design of systems, kinda specialized in the electrical end. Retired at 55 and went full time RVing for almost 5 years, wife’s medical condition meant finding a permanent spot so sold the RV and bought a S&B. She passed away and remarried 5 years later. Worked five years delivering parts for a auto parts co. Built one house except for HVAC and remodeled two other housesPresent wife and I went back to full time 2 1/2 yrs ago

After a year of engineering school where the asked me to not come back I wanted to go to school for electrician training, it was full but they offered a 3 year program where you started in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. I did the three years but found myself working HVAC doing service work on residential heating and air conditioning equipment.

After 10 years and a nasty split from a women I took a job for an engineering firm getting easements for everything from telecommunications to high voltage transmission lines to wind farms. I spent another 10 years doing that but I met my wife and had kids and couldn’t stand to be away from them every weekday.

Back to HVAC as a service tech, but 3 weeks ago decided to join a smaller company as a Service Manager.

My wife has a Human Resources degree but was taking classes for pharmacy school. She is in her first year of the Pharm D program at the local University.

Our kids are 9,8 and 8. 14 months between all three of them so yeah we tend to keep busy with something around our house all of the time.

Enlisted Army, 12B, combat engineer/Sapper for ten years. Went green to gold, got my commission spent another 12 years. Retired after 22 years.
Spent 1 year working for a bridging company, then opened my own small marketing/printing business. Sold it after 5 years. Hit the road in 2016. Spend at least two weeks a year doing volunteer work around the country (habitat, red cross). Sometimes, I work seasonal jobs when I need some extra pay.

I spent 10 years within those 30 working years at volunteer fire house. Most exciting part of my life so far. 2am fire/accident/Medical calls and then back at the paid job by morning made for little sleep and a lot play for a guy in his 20s back then. Loved It and loved my crew. Hats off to you sir for your volunteer work. You’re much appreciated during these times. All first responders here on this forum- thank you so very much.

Update......as of today, Friday, April 24th, I am 6 days away from retirement. The official day is April 30th. It's been somewhat of a roller coaster ride the past couple of months because of the Covid virus thing going on, primarily because of the stock market and the earning loss associated with that fluctuation. I seriously considered postponing retirement until some unknown time....when things settle back down and return to "normal"....whatever that is! In the end, and after meeting with our financial advisor/investment guy, we made the decision to go ahead and stay on our original plan. I hope we are doing the right thing. We still plan on laying low while the Covid thing is going on and will just keep doing what we are doing now....riding the motorcycle and socially distancing ourselves from others. Bicycling is also one of our recreational pastimes, and that can also be done with relative safety by avoiding large crowds and taking along our own drinks and snacks.

Congratulations on your retirement !!!

I'm certainly no "retirement financial expert" (but I do have 11 years of retirement experience, if that counts)…

We retired just after the 2008 "stock market meltdown"... The ONE thing our financial advisors all told us was "DO NOT ENTER INTO ANY EQUITIES PAYMENT PLANS UNTIL THE MARKET IMPROVES".... Their reasoning was that we had enough other income to maintain our lifestyle and all our "equity eligible income" was tied to the stock market, at least in some percentage. So, don't take a reduced value equity plan, wait until the market recovers to enter any of those "payment for life equity income plans"...

We were "close to doing it in January when the market reached 30K, but decided to hold out and "here we are again, right back at 2008"

Other than that "laymen's advice" enjoy your retirement, you've earned it !!!

Thank you John. The company that I work for decided on April 1st (not an April Fools Day trick), that anyone/everyone that wanted to bail out of the plant until May 4th could do so, if they fell into the CDC guidelines for "high risk" for the Corona Virus.......with full pay(I'm 65 years old so I'm high risk)! I was like....WHAT? Where do I sign? So technically, I'm still employed and have spent the last 3 1/2 weeks at home drawing my normal check and have one more to go...next week. And the kicker is, those 4 1/2 weeks off with pay are treated just like I was working every day, so I've accumulated another 16-17 hours of PTO too. Somebody pinch me and see if I'm dreaming

Worked for 5 years in Occupational Therapy and then made the natural transition into Information Technology for the past 20 years. (Long story, and kinda boring) I work as a Systems Administrator for a large school district in Minnesota. No two days alike. A real blessing of a job.
