Rust under truck

Looking at 2015 F-350. Not sure how to tell the difference between normal rust and “problem” rust. Any body have any input on this?

My 2015 F250 looks similar to yours. For me, it's a matter of driving it on salted roads in the winter. I have a "roller pressure washer broom" that I can invert to wash the bottom of my vehicles in the spring. Once "de-salted and dry" (about a week after washing) I spray the bottom with Fluid Film rust inhibitor. The first year we owned the truck is when I noticed some "surface rust". That summer I cleaned and treated the bottom of all our vehicles. I haven't seen any "worsening of rusted parts" with the annual cleaning and respray...

As for the shock absorbers, I replaced mine last year with Bilsteins. There was NO WAY IN HELL to unbolt the OEM shocks. I finally wound up with an impact wrench and twisted the attachment bolts off the front shocks. The rears, I used penetrating oil and they came loose the next day. If you've got any "steering wheel vibration" or road vibration, I'd suggest the upgrade to Bilsteins. It's a remarkable difference in driving.

Looks probably normal, maybe better than some, for any 5-6 year old vehicle being driven on highways in northern states where salting goes on for 6-7 months to keep roads cleared.
I remember as a kid my aunt/uncle's vehicles in the UP you could've poked a finger through just about any panel of any of their vehicles.

Are you new to Ohio? Having lived in Ohio my whole life every vehicle I've had rusted holes eventually. The rust on yours looks about normal.

if you live in the salt states, clean your under side, and use a rust inhibitor on it,I spent 12 years of my life in St Paul Minnesota,so I learned that lesson well

We bought A 2008 Escape just prior to moving back to Michigan. We sold it in October last year, 11 years old with 10 of them on northern Michigan salted winter roads. There was no more rust visible under that vehicle than there is in the OP's photo of his 2015 F350. All I did to prevent rust was thoroughly wash the underside of the vehicle every spring, after it dried thoroughly, spray it with Fluid Film and keep it clean...

Realistically, the "factory rust prevention" from the way cars are assembled, protected with sealants and "rust inhibited materials" todays vehicles are much better built than the vehicles of 20, 30 years ago. Back in the 70's and 80's, I remember seeing 3 year old vehicles with holes in the fenders. Occasionally, now, a 10 or 15 year old vehicle might look that way, but I don't think I've seen "significant, destructive rust" on a new vehicle (less than 4 or 5 years old) at least since 2000 or around there.
