Portable air compressor & TPMS

In preparation for my upcoming trip this week, I bought a new portable air compressor. I purchased a small Kobalt unit for around $50. It has the ability to be powered by either 12 volt or 115. I was a bit skeptical about it at first but was pleasantly surprised. It allows you to set your desired pressure and has an automatic shut off. I had recently installed the TST 507 TPMS, the display on my monitor was within 1 lb. of the compressor. Both systems seem to be working as desired. Hopefully I don't really need either one. I just thought that perhaps this information may be of some help to someone looking and trying to decide.

I like that feature-- will consider this one when my current compressor dies.

One question, about how long is the DC cord on it? I looked it up at lowes but it did not give that info.

The DC cord is about 12'. I have not measured to see if it can reach my rear axle from my trailer battery, I doubt it though. A good idea is an inverter and an extension cord. Then again, I could always make a set of cables for my trailer battery with a 12volt socket so that I can reach my rear axle.

Have you tried using your new pump on the 12v setting to inflate any tires on your RV or trucks? My impression of almost all 12v pumps is that they lack the "HP" to inflate much of anything other than air mattresses, balls, and other small items. When it comes to inflating a car or truck tire, I have read that they are quite ineffective. Apparently, some of the very expensive 12v pumps are better in performing this task but you have to pay a lot of $$$$ for one.
When you get a chance to see how it performs - not just topping up - but taking a car or truck tire that is very low or flat and giving it a good test and let us know how it does.

Will do. But it's just as easy to plug the extension cord into the trucks inverter. One of the great things about this unit is the ease of on board storage. I have a big compressor in my garage and actually only bought this small compressor for topping off on the road should the situation arise. I figured it couldn't be a bad idea.

That Kobalt looks nice. My Craftsman 12V portable gets my tires up to 50 with no problems at all. Probably not so speedy if I'm 10 lbs low.

Don't worry about the DC cord reaching ... Just get a hose long enough ...

The hose is not detachable.

I just ordered a 12V extension cord for my compressor. That should make my life much easier.

+1

The DC cord will give you a voltage/power drop, a longer air hose will not.

I was speaking of an extension cord to my inverter not a 12 volt cord. I carry a big enough cord that a drop should not be an issue.

Huh? There's such a thing? A hose with Schraeder valve on one end that my compressor clamps onto.

Not so, ... think of the quick disconnects on the air hose ... where you most
likely have a female end on yours for the air chuck and other devises to
attach, you can also connect another length of hose (an extension if you
will), and then you can reach that much (however long it may be), further.

Me too! Great to have the ability to top off before you leave the campground if needed!

Ok, the OP just said his hose was not detachable, so you recommended an extension hose.

I had one 12V compressor that *did* have a detachable hose, but it was a non-standard fitting size. Bummer, so I bought the Craftsman.

I figure that a 12V extension cord can't be much more loss than what's already running from my trailer batteries to the 12V port next to the stereo.

Inside the circut is protected by a fuse and isn't rated for the amp. draw
you will pull with the compressor most likely..
