Double towing?

Do any threads exist on above. Want to see if I can modify the rear of the 5er and pull a motorcycle trailer behind it. I know it is "legal" in GA and FL and basically those are the only trips I am considering, like Bike Week and Biketoberfest in Daytona from Atlanta. Pretty much flat and straight shot.

If you cannot point me to a thread; let me hear your EXPERIENCE regarding same set up.

Trying to avoid buying a toyhauler for 1 or 2 trips a year to Daytona and not having the motorcycle.

Thanks.....OutbackMel from HOT, SUNNY, Arizona....

I have a friend with a fiver who tows his fishing boat behind the trailer. He seems to do just fine with it and he's in his late 70's.

I am certain that the caveat for the bike racks on the rear of TT's is going to apply here, even more so. Get a receiver that connects direct to the frame of the fiver. And, you will probably need a low drop drawbar to keep the cycle trailer reasonably level.

If I was to do this for myself, I'd also get one of those camera systems to mount to the back of the fiver so I could keep an eye on the bike trailer while on the road.

You might find CarKath's posts (Rules of the Road, More, More) which can be found in the Odd's n Ends section (12-23-2011), helpful. He has a state-by-state brief outline of towing regulations - including double/triple towing limits with respect to length overall restrictions.

Here's my previous setup... Not a Keystone, by my WW Toyhauler I just traded in on the Avalanche.

TH is a 37'er... Ski's are about 18'... I was 71' bumper to bumper... Which by the way is 6' over the OK tandem length limit. Towed all over OK with this setup without issue.

Length laws for tandem vary state to state.. As well as acceptable coupler type... Check in the states you wish to drive. Reciprocity does not cover equipment type/actual usage.. Only the privilege of use.

Oh.. forgot to mention... I plan on having the Avalanche setup the same way.. Just haven't gotten around to it.

When I did the WW, I went to a hitch shop recommended by local RV dealer. Paid them to make a hitch and wire it for 4-way flat... I think I paid about $350.

The setup was 100% rock solid stable.

Thanks for the info

Looks like I need to do the following:

* Welding/frame shop with a hitch that is frame connected and has the correct drop height.

* Install a back view camera on the RV so I can see that "thang" anytime I need to see it, like often.

* Dig out Carkath's state by state regs for double tow.

All spot on. Thanks. Provides me with a great base of info to work from.

OutbackMel

ohhhh, make sure I never ever have to back that thing up...

Your insight will save me a ton of time and I appreciate it.

Being FROM Oklahoma, I would guess that the only place your total length would be checked is the perpetual speed trap on US 75 south of Atoka (actually Tushka). And you would probably only be stopped if you were speeding and the length would be secondary!

Towing or not, when driving through Tuska-Atoka-Stringtown, cruise is 2-3 below the limit regardless of how absurd the limit seems. Lol

There are several bolt-on receivers for RV's that connect right to the trailer's frame so you may not need much custom welding shop work. Curt makes some nice ones. For example:

http://www.etrailer.com/Specialty-Tr.../41991-07.html

And the drop height can be handled with the drawbar or ball mount:

They're available in adjustable models, too.

I prefer this method of taking my Goldwing camping... the only problem is it won't fit in the bed room so I can tuck it in at night....

I have seen alot of 5vers over the years pulling a some what short trailer, but yesterday in Jackpot NV. passing through I couldn't believe my eyes what I was seeing, a 3/4 ton chev pick-up pulling about a 36' 5ver then at least a 20 - 22' enclosed car trailer, I thought how in the heck does this guy ever find a place to park or fuel up..wow Just thought I would throw that out. Happy Campin...........Ron

Double tow

That's why GOD made pull through campsites...my biggest fear is pulling into a fuel lane and the truck in front of me won't start. Had something close to that happen on the way cross country. Went to the RV pump with the 5er and pulled in behind a 40+ foot MH and whamo, he had to be towed. I guess when in the truck lanes for fuel, that would be highly unlikely to happen. If it ever did, I guess camping at Pilot or Flying J ain't all bad if you get by the fuel smell

Drive them like you would a set of doubles. You just don't get into a situation where you need to back up

Ron, had a truck similar to yours in the shop today. '08 Business class crew with an 8.3 Cummins. Retrofitted a brake light switch to install a brake controller

Jason, Someday we might upgrade to a newer model, but so far this ol 99 is doing great. We are on our way home slowley from AZ. and about 3500 miles with no problems, very happy. This is our 3rd trip south and so far so good. You mentioned retrofitted a brake light switch, when my cruise control got fixed after purchasing the Freightliner, they told me it had something to do with the parking brake if I remember right, these days just to add something, you just cant tap into anything anymore without screwing up something else.

I saw someone doing it with an ATV trailer, but I’m surprised, as I thought California was pretty strict. CarKath posted a lengthy summary, but most entries don’t specify if triple towing is allowed or not:
http://www.keystonerv.org/forums/showthread.php?t=4707

Here’s a table, but many discussions say it requires a special license and/or endorsement(s):

It has to be under 65 ft. And I believe it requires a class B non commercial license. A friend of mine used to do it down there, but he also has a CDL.
The best thing to do is to contact your area DOT and find out what you can do.
