Beaver stew?? I didn't know there was such a thing. My granddaughter ran over one a couple of months ago and was just devastated (she loves animals). It was right by the entrance to their subdivision and she didn't want it to be there when she drove in/out......so, GP was called to do "something". Got it off the road and in the trees so she wouldn't have to look at it. If I had known they were good eating I would have dressed it right there and took it back to the trailer!!

Well, a big congrats on your end too Chip. She is graduating from Washington university. She graduated with honors (musta gots her smarts from her mother and her good looks from me!  ) Did you guys experience the nasty storms this morning? I had blown through by the time we hit the road this morning...about 6AM and as everything was starting up around 8:30, the sun was out...kind of, and the skies cleared up. It turned out to be a beautiful day.

I have ate my way across the Pacific, through Asia and into the Middle East with my 20 years in the Navy. I don't really have much in the way of food aversions so I had fun on each port visit. Balut in the Philippine's, giant water bugs in Thailand and I am pretty sure the snacks I ate cockroaches at the street vendors in Malaysia.

Squirrel stuffed with sunflower seeds, raisins and pine seeds is popular occasional fare around where I grew up, but my childhood friends and cousins loved to hunt and eat black bear. There's no way to make that disgusting greasy stringy mess palatable - I don't care what anyone says.

In our area we have this stuff that can only be found in about 3 states, is sold and stores, and tastes great..... SCRAPPLE. They take all the left over pig parts grind um up boil them down mold them into blocks and package them. cut a slice off put it on the griddle to crisp both side to keep it from falling apart and YUM YUM. Good by itself or on a sammich with egg and cheese

RDL, I don't know if this says much for Maryland, scrapple and all, but Taylor ham is also known in those parts. I'm not quite certain what is in it, but from New Jersey down the east coast to parts of Maryland it is commonplace. Just like scrapple, fry a couple thick slices in a pan, fry two eggs over easy, some American fried with biscuits and you're set to go. (Yes, probably set to go at an early age if you did this very often)

Grandma told me she ate a little bear as a kid. I don't believe she was joking, I saw her smile 3 times in my life. She grew up in the Calcasieu River bottoms in Louisiana. Her family did whatever they had to to make it. Farming, timber work and trapping. Pic is about 1910 of her Dad, Grandpa, and brothers....

One of my early hunting trips to Colorado I saw a skinned bear hanging in a camp. That's as close to looking like a human as I could have imagined.

wow... some of the things we could learn from those living during those times. Can you imagine some of the people we encounter today, trying to survive, even one day, back then?

I can't imagine what would happen it they had to go "catch it".

I've eaten turtle, racoon, squirrel, and rabbit. My mom used to make the best rabbit gravy. Otherwise, I've eaten some of the exotic stuff you get in the fancy restaurants (we usually take an ocean cruise every other year). Some of the stuff that tastes really good - you are better off not knowing what it is. 😊

Used to get scrapple for breakfast at the Reading Terminal Market when I was on Philly layovers. Interesting stuff with potatoes and eggs.
