the old "weight" question

My sweetie and I want to go to Severville, TN this fall - before snow flies.

Our unit is a "05 Silverado 2500HD (36,678) gas, 2x, crew cab, 6 liter w/4:10 & 16K Huskey slider hitch (cat scale 6450 lbs) Our camper is an '08 Laredo 315RL. Total package, truck & 5th wheel, with everything - people, fuel etc. is cat scale 17,068.

Am I asking for problems to attempt a trip into the mountains of Tennesee? We did an 800+ mile round trip to the Daytona 500 in Feb - but that was level going with the slight incline returning home to East central Alabama. Wicked head wind and still got 8+ mpg.

Your help is very appreciated - we don't want to be foolish about this and since a different truck is not an option; we may have to consider a different camper. Thank you, Bill.

I've traveled the hill of Tenn. Some of the grades are 6% & go on for miles and miles. You've got the right rear gears & hopefully an auxillary oil & tranny cooler. I had no problem pulling my TT & gear weighting 8000 lbs with a 7500 lb truck and 1000 lbs of gear & people. I realize we have different tow vehicles but if you are within your weight specifications you should do ok although it will be a slow ride up them mountains. Good luck!!

We towed our Springdale through the mountains of WV this past summer and had no problems at all. We were down in 4th at times, but still clipping along at 55-65. Averaged about 9.8 for the entire trip.

I know we're talking two entirely different units here, but I'd say you should be OK as long as you don't expect to be the fastest to the top of the hill.

Enjoy the trip. Once you get back, you'll have all the answers you need to make decisions about next year's trip
