Electrical connectors on brake drum

I had some Goodyear Endurance tires installed ( could not handle the china bomb pucker factor any longer) and with the wheels off I noticed 2 electrical connectors exiting the axle tube and strapping to the back of the drum backing plate (see pic). I'm assuming they are just an unused harness for an option my trailer does not have.

Any insight?

If you look closely you’ll see that the 2 wires coming out of the backing plate are connected to the 2 wires coming out of the axle.

Are those not your brake wires? If they aren't I can't see the other pair.

Those are the brake magnet wires connected to the brake wires coming out of the axle. They have connectors on them with no other purpose other than that.

Peto, they look perfectly normal to me. Electric brake wires.

It's strange that they are not connected to anything. I did not climb under and investigate so maybe the wires do connect at the backing plate and then those are just pig tails for something else??? Each hub appears to be the same and the brakes work fine.

They are connected. A pair of wires come out of the drum backer (1) and a pair of wires come out of the axle (2) and they are crimped together and covered with shrink tubing (3) where they tie together. There is a clip on the drum backer (4) that keeps it all from flopping around.

Only dumb question is the one not asked.

If you want more confusion, go to the other side and look at those brake wires, you see three sets of wires connected. 1) brake backing plate 2) wires into the axle 3) wires coming from the underbelly.

#3 set is the brake signal wires.

Note: If you want to make sure your brakes are working, just jack up the axle, then pull the emergency cable, then you will easily see if the brakes are working or not. Don't forget to put the plug back in.
