Inverter update. Passport 221Bh

Recently purchased Renogy 1000 watt pure sine wave invertwr with built in UPS transfer switch. Was not happy with its operation. Inverter had to be powered on for transfer switch to work. Essentially this seems to be a backup ups for computers when using the built in transfer switch. Also qhen plugged in to shore power outlets were restricted to the inverter 1000 watts.

I then purchased an external automatic transfer switch from amazon. An extra junction box and the external transfer switch is less elegant but works very well. With inverter off and shore power connected the inverted circuit has power (as you would expect). With inverter on and shore power connected there is also power and not subject to the inverter 1000 watt limitations. With no shore power and inverter on we have power for electronics tv, my 800 watt coffee pot etc ... this is how we expected the renogy to work

Mike, after reading up on some inverter jargon in my searches for a suitable inverter solution, I agree that the Renogy is designed to act as a UPS……as long as it is actually on. The key features that an RV inverter needs are an automatic transfer switch AND pass-through. The Renogy has a somewhat auto transfer, but as you discovered, it doesn’t have a pass-through. This is VERY helpful information you shared and is top of my mind as I search for a unit that will work for me.

Ya I think I mentioned this in one of my previous posts...in my case although I have pass through the xantrex XC models are a converter/charger as well as an inverter and the fan runs. You would have to go with a similar setup to shutdown the XC when plugged in!

Anyways for future references you need a non-charging inverter with pass through
