Places of interest on a western trip.
We are planning a trip from Quebec to Seattle WA next summer.
We will be going via Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Washington and add Wyoming and South Dakota on the return part.
We plan to visit Portland, Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Custer state park and would appreciate any info on places worth visiting along the way.
Thank-you

Sounds like a fantastic trip. Lots of internet info on what to see/do. Of course Glacier NP in Montana along with any number of ghost towns enroute is fantastic. The area around Portland is very beautiful whether at the coast or in the mountains.YS is a tourist zoo, but I'd recommend at least 3 days to see the entire park. Geyser basins, Lamar Valley, Yellowstone Falls and Mammoth Hot Springs. We actually prefer Teton NP for pure scenery and wildlife viewing. Custer State Park is one of our favorite camping experiences. Tons of wildlife as well as close proximity to Rushmore. Bear Country USA near Rapid City was a great side trip plus there's Deadwood and lots of other touristy spots if you like those kinds of attractions. If you'll PM me I can give specifics on places to stay and other attractions we found interesting. For some pictures of these areas click here: http://www.keystoneforums.com/forums/album.php?u=19389 . Look for the Albums that might interest you.
Hope you're allowing plenty of time for trip like this I'm afraid it'd take me all summer and fall to see everything.

2018 We stayed at Memaloose Oregon State Park about 70 miles from Portland then to ft Stevens, parks are excellent Stevens is the more popular park in Oregon. Astorine crossing over to Washington side is way more beautiful along the Columbia river then Oregon. We rode our Harleys down town Portland for the day visit a Harley dealer then rode 26 through and round mt hood. Traffic is terrible and couldn't appreciate the seanrey.

Sounds like a fun trip! Along with the previous suggestions, you may want to consider:
Olympic NP, WA
Silver Falls State Park, OR
Craters of the Moon NM, ID
Register Cliff Monument and Oregon Trail Ruts in Guernsey, WY
Scotts Bluff NM, NE
The last two are probably too far south for your itinerary.

If you cross into the US at Thunderbay go down 61 to Duluth hit highway 2 go west to ND.
There are a few nice places to stop on 61 lots of small rivers flowing into Lake Superior.

Crossing at the Sault think about stopping to see the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. There is the Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point located in the lighthouse. In South Dakota Go through the Badlands National Park then stop in Wall and go to Wall Drug. If you like aircraft go to Oshkosh WI and see the EAA museum there, one of the best. In Oregon go along the Columbia River and make a stop in Pendleton. The Wildhorse Casino has a great campground. There is a neat Indian Museum there to go through too.

Sounds like fun. The wife and I are going to be doing things like that soon. I retire the end of December and we'll see how it goes from there.
The SD area in the Rapid City, Badlands, Custer SP, Wind National Park, the Needles Highway, but NOT with the RV, Spearfish Canyon, Deadwood, Leads, Keystone, Devil's Tower are all great driving/riding areas, if you have a motorcycle that is.
BUT do NOT try that area between August 3rd thru the 17th. Although that's a bit longer than the Sturgis Bike Rally week, the bikers are there early and stay a bit later. So any time before the first of August or after mid month you'll be fine. Also that time of year there's always some sudden storms that pop up and sometimes TONS of large hail.
I think you'll have a great trip and let us know how it all goes for you.

can't tell you much about the other states but on the early part of the states in Michigan you go into the states through the SOO. several campgrounds on river there and a casino where you can stay. Marquette also has a casino with electric. just enjoy the UP.
There also is the SPAM Museum in MN....way cool. If you are near this place worth a stop.

If your coming into Oregon on I-84. There is a lot to explore or see. It was mentioned the Pendleton casino. I 2nd the campground, been there many times. The Columbia river gorge is nice to drive through that time of year. I can tell you were you will see big horn sheep, in the mornings their close the the freeway. No safe place to park and watch them. You can easily make it to the coast in 1 day from Pendleton to Astoria to camp at or near the Columbia river and Pacific Ocean. I can explain how to by pass Ptld. Many historic things to see around Astoria besides the Ocean. The highway 101 from Astoria to Seattle has much to see and visit. I-5 freeway from Ptld to Seattle not much so much, just lots of traffic. If you want to visit Mt. St Helens you need to do that by taking I-5. If your going I-84 though Oregon, I can provide details about stay and sight seeing. Just ask.

We highly recommend the Theodore Roosevelt National Park (Medora, ND) and if you stay there get tickets to see the Medora Musical. Pricy tickets, but so worth it. They have been putting on this show every summer for 55+ years and while it is outdoors they have escalators and it is extremely well run. We went this summer and loved it. The world’s largest bison and frontier town is in Jamestown, ND and kind of neat. The Enchanted Highway near Gladstone, ND is kind of neat and probably worth the detour.

just did a 7000 mile trip thru 11 western US states starting in Portland. make sure to see the Badlands & Mt Rushmore in SD. and Devils Tower in Wyoming is a MUST. your return route might take you through Idaho so check out the Sawtooth Mountains along state hwy 75 and stay at Redfish Lake & maybe spend an afternoon in Sun Valley. Craters of the Moon is just south of there and has RV campsites but its tight to maneuver and spots are limited. in Oregon, do NOT miss driving along I84 up the Columbia River Gorge (Multnomah Falls is a must and depending on the time of year there is a little train ride out of Hood River that goes up into the fruit valley on a sunny afternoon). and make a point to stop and stay at Wallowa Lake in eastern Oregon (we natives call it 'Little Switzerland') - the mountains and alpine scenery there are breathtaking and the drive in from LaGrande is gorgeous. of all these places just know Yellowstone is a very crowded traffic jam and there are always tens of thousands of tourists there on any given day so plan WAY ahead to make reservations - best if you have a tow or towed vehicle as parking is a nightmare in every part of the park and almost impossible if you are in a motor home or towing a trailer. i found the BEST parts of Yellowstone in the northern end of the park especially NE of Tower Jct along the Yellowstone River at Slough Creek (but again, make sure you reserve FAR in advance). have a great trip!

I would plan about 3 months for the trip. We use https://www.tripadvisor.com/. We have seen so many things in our travels. Figure what towns you want to stop in than trip Adviser will let you know what is in the area to see. I think I have been to all the places listed above except fie Wisconsin. Milwaukee has a lot of great BEER. LOL
