Wow

Okay, I just saw a new one. A guy in a pickup pulling a bumper pull travel trailer with another trailer behind it with a Jon Boat on it. I'm pretty sure that's not legal right? I live in Colorado. I have to admit, I was pretty impressed when I saw him back that rig up though.

Triple tow laws vary by state. It happens to be legal in Colorado. http://rvlife.com/rv-triple-towing-laws/

Two trailers, but it is commonly called triple towing. I don't know why.

I thought two trailers was called doubles. Very common in OTR case. Triples is three trailers, saw some in Oregon. Cross winds made for an interesting show in front of me.

From what I've read "hauling doubles" is used for commercial trailers. With RVs for some weird reason it is commonly called "triple towing". I can't find any explanation of the origin. Apparently commercial trucking is regulated by the federal government and RVs are regulated by the states. So "hauling doubles" can be legal in states where "triple towing" is not.

For whatever reason you will find that the common term in the RV genre is "triple towing." There are many sites available to tell you which states allow and which don't.

What gets me here in Oregon while commercial rigs can truly tow Triples (three trailers), RV are not allowed to double tow.

Hm, I thought you could only do it with 5'ers, obviously I was mistaken.

Professional drivers need an endorsement on their CDL license for double towing this is regulated by federal not state. State can control what highways can be used and total length though. Private passenger licensing is controlled by the state.

I've only seen travel trailers towing an additional trailer in a very few "western states". In most states that do allow "doubles" it is restricted to fifth wheels and/or goose-neck hitches on the lead trailer. But, yes travel trailer "double towing" is legal in some states.

What concerns me is that tiny bumper towing the boat . Maybe if it was a fifth wheel but not a bumper pull .

I don't think 5th wheels' bumpers are any better. They are just better suited to double-tow. You still have to make sure a hitch is properly installed.

I don't think there is much, if any difference between the bumpers on a TT and the bumpers on a 5er. They both are not particularly sturdy. I would not trust either with a hitch for a triple tow.

Curt Manufacturing makes a nice receiver hitch assembly designed specifically to install on the rear end of RV's including TT's and 5er's. It connects directly to the frame, bypassing the bumper completely. If I were going to triple tow, I'd install one of them first. It will handle the tongue weight and the pull weight of a good size boat safely.

My grandfather used to do this all the time, albeit with a much smaller boat than a huge pontoon boat.

I regularly triple tow (truck/fifth wheel/boat) in Michigan. Here the maximum length is 75' and I'm about 6" shy of that. Adding a bike rack to the front bumper would make the rig too long. A endorsement is required on my driver's license. That requires a written test but no driving test. I have a 2" receiver mounted under the rear bumper and use a regular 2" ball to tow the boat. I've considered a small 5x8 trailer to tow the RZR during hunting season but I don't think I could justify it for that once a year need. I do have a 10K flatbed trailer for the tractor, but I'd be very reluctant to put that much weight behind the Cougar. These are pictures of the rig with our previous truck, I can't find the ones with the current truck.

So...

Triple towing is two trailers?
Is double towing one trailer?
Is single towing just driving your truck down the road?

This terminology is just wrong... LOL. I guess if enough people say the world is flat, it must be.

Don't get too close to the edge, you might fall off and nobody has ever returned to tell us what's really over there...

The "legal terminology in Michigan is Recreational double" I suppose calling it quad towing would be appropriate if you've got a trailer with a 4wheeler on it ???

Anyway, here's the pamphlet from the Michigan SOS: https://www.michigan.gov/documents/r...le_21025_7.pdf
