What size tires

If switching from a trailer tire to a LT truck tire which is better to use the 245/75/16 or the 235/85/16?

Owned a 1994 Prowler TT and had a wheel break off the axle while coming down the interstate. Owned a 2003 Flagstaff 5th wheel and blew tires on it. Now have the 2010 Cougar and just blew two tires on that coming home from vacation. Also the second spare tire has also seemed to have went flat and this morning one of the other tires (that had not blown) is now flat!!

We have 11 days till our next weekend trip!

Have been advised to upgrade to a truck tire among other things.

Any suggestions on how to keep tires from blowing? Motel rooms are starting to look appealing to me as of late.

I would go with the 235 as it is slightly narrower, with a little taller sidewall to better absorb turning flex and road irregularities.

Do you know your loaded weight?

Make sure the tire you choose will carry the weight, and that it is classed as an all position tire (steer/drive/or trailer).

X2 ..... Also check the clearance on the width of the tire (mainly with the slide mechanism) and the space between tires. This tire size calculator may help you compare your ST tire to the new size LT you are considering. Hope this helps, Hank

Not enough info....According to the specs for your trailer it should have 5200# axles but what is the size of the certified OE tires? What is your axle spacing?

Just curious what brand tires these were? Fyi, some of the original equipment tires used by RV manufacturers are selected more for low price than quality, and problems frequently ensue. This has more to due with tire quality than a specific tire type.

Clearly you need a better tire but that isn't necessarily an LT or 'truck' tire, although these aren't a bad choice as long as they are intended/approved for trailer use by the manufacturer and provide sufficient weight capacity. As CW just noted proper selection will require some additional information.

We purchased the 4 new LT truck tires and they looked good on the trailer and could tell was a better tire but there was no room left between the tires and the fender wells so ended up going back to the same size Tow Maxx tires. Checked the date on the old tires. They were dated April 2008, the camper was built in Aug of 2009, we bought it in July 2010. The tires we purchased now are dated April 2011. We have bought the tire covers to put on them now while the camper is sitting idle. Still waiting for the insurance company to get back with us and the RV dealership to call us about the parts list. We did take the camper to Lexington VA over the weekend and we have two more local trips scheduled in the next few weeks and then we will get camper fixed and put away for the winter.
