Passport AC Short Cycles - Anyone Else?

My 2014 2650 BH Passport has a Dometic air conditioner and thermostat. It works fine until the camper cools down to setpoint. At that time it cycles on and off about 1 or 2 times per minute. Has anyone else seen this and if so how was it resolved? I called Dometic and got nowhere with them. The controls have a thermostat with 3 wires and supposedly comunicates with a control unit in the return. I asked Dometic for technical info and they said they could not provide it. There are 3 wires on the thermostat that are labeled 12v+ 12v- and Comms. I'm not sure if the thermostat or controller is the issue and didn't see anything on the comms terminal with my voltmeter that made sense. Any help will be appreciated.

Interesting. I just noticed this same problem yesterday on my 2810BH (it was our first time camping in hot weather). I haven't had time to investigate it but had initially guessed it was from dirty/overloaded campground power.

Ours does it too. I just leave the fan on low and let it run. I haven't really looked into it.

What does it do if up turn the temp down more? If you turn it up does it stop cycling?

If the AC is still under warranty, I would let the dealer handle it. The other option is to keep after Dometic. It's their responsibility to provide support to their customers.

Is there a ceiling cold air vent that may be blowing cold air directly near or onto the tthermostat? First thing I would check.
Also, from firsthand experience, the factory thermostat units are not the highest quality. I have always replaced mine with reliable and accurate digital/programmable thermostats available at home stores

The 2650BH does have a A/C vent by the bunks that can be aimed near the thermostat. Try rotating this vent a different direction& see if this helps.
Good luck.

Could it be that it is freezing up? Also dump out the main vent instead of the ductwork. See what happens

My guess would be this. Thermostats, while some are better than others, are simple in function. The air is probably circulating close to the t-stat making that area cooler sooner. Maybe that area also gets warmer sooner when the air is cycled off. Which means short cycles.

Either that or the "sweet spot" has not been found yet. I mean if its 90 out and you have the ac set to 74, it might be too warm to keep that temp perfectly, but maybe if you set it to 72 it would be enough to overcome it and lengthen the time between cycles.

On ours, the ac vent is not aimed anywhere near the t stat. It starts to short cycle once it reached the desired temp. As for replacing the stat, it is the newer dometic digital one. It has 3 wires, 12+,12-, and a comm. I could not find a way to hook this up to a conventional thermostat.

I have a Passport 3220BH with that exact same problem. Luckily a mechanic at my dealer was able to help me out.

The thermostat is electronic, there is a control box in the return air side of the AC. This control box does the temperature sensing. Between the return air and supply air there is a thin piece of white foam separating the two sides. If there is any air escaping through the edges of this foam it cools the temperature probe at the control box and causes the compressor to cycle off. The system is working exactly as it is designed to. The culprit is the white foam separator.

The fix, get a roll of silver tape from the AC section at any hardware store and tape all the edges of the foam to prevent the "leakage". Worked like a charm. This saved my recent vacation

If you have a single zone LCD thermostat and set the fan to AUTO, the fan will cycle between low & high as needed. When the fan motor switches from high to low, it will momentarly shut down but the copmpressor will continue to run. You can eliminate this by selecting high or low fan speed.

Had the same problem once the my 19 premier cooled down, found I had my kitchen vent pointed the t-stat direction, pointed it more foward and it went back to cycling fine. I run my fan on auto so the unit cuts off when the space satisfys

We had a similar problem on our 2015 2650bh. Eventually the AC didn't even turn off. It then died a couple weeks ago camping in 90deg plus. I don't know what caused it but we suspect it was a dud AC. I will watch how we set the vents though. Luckily the dealer replaced within a week it under warranty. We will get to try it out again next weekend.
