Amarillo, TX

I am planning on meeting family somewhere in the amarillo area next year.....half way between STL and PHX. Does anyone have any recommendations or comments on any campgrounds or RV parks around that area ?
Thanks,
Grant

Post RE: Amarillo, TX

Hi Grant,

Amarillo RV Ranch has been recommended to us, and (although we haven't stayed here, yet) it has good reviews. http://www.amarillorvranch.com

About 30 miles S/SE of Amarillo is Palo Duro State Park... aka, the "Grand Canyon of Texas".

Lake Meredith Nat'l Rec Area is north of town -- there are RV no hook-up's or facilities, but a dump station is available in the area.

While in Amarillo, go to the Big Texan Steak Ranch ("Home of the Free 72oz Steak Dinner")! It's a fun place with some unusual menu items... and if you stay in Amarillo you can call ahead for a "Longhorn Limo" ride. Limo rides were free at one time. http://www.bigtexan.com

And there's also the Cadillac Ranch

Hope this helps,
Terri [& DH Kevin]

On our last west to east cross country trip on I-40 we caught up with a huge Midwestern storm front that was threatening the Mississippi delta country in the Memphis area. We decided to hunker down in Amarillo, TX where we had already scheduled a two day layover at Fort Amarillo RV Park & Resort. The sites there were all level pull thru and plenty long enough. They were narrow but divided. It has very easy access to and from I-40. A super Walmart is less than five miles away.

We ended up spending five days there. The Mississippi crested well below flood levels and I-40 was going to be wide open all the way past Memphis.

Stayed at Palo Duro several years ago, one of the finest campgrounds I have visited. Lot of history, geographic sites, hiking, biking trails, lots to see and do. We were going to stay one night and wound up staying a week.

I love Palo Duro however be careful the entrance to the park is very steep and depending on the size and height of your camper that could be a problem. we just traded up from a pop up to a tt within the past month and havent been there in the tt but i think our 26 footer should be fine going down and coming up
