I’ve used my spare several times in the last two years and have had no problem with the lug nut length and yes I do have different wheels than the steel wheel spare. The one thing is to make sure you get the lug nuts to center in the holes with the studs. The nuts would start to tighten on the lip of the wheel not centered in the holes. Just wiggle a bit as you turn the nuts down.
