King to Queen mattress change

Most would yank out the old King mattress and toss in the new mattress and be done with it.

I wanted to verify the existing bed frame would handle the increase in weight of the new mattress as well as evaluate the existing bed rollers, support struts, etc

The new mattress weighs about 80 lbs compared to the old King OEM that was about 35lbs

The existing two rollers the bed frame slides on appear fine and are mounted ok.. I decided to try a couple of spare strips of UHMW I had to see if the rollers would roll on top of this and spread the increased weight out over the carpet a bit more..

This worked fine and I have orders two, strips of HDPE.. white in color and these are 1/8 thick.. they will lay down in front of bed when ready to retract the BR slide and once slide is out hey are just picked up and stowed away

This protects the 8 year old carpet, displaces the weight from the rollers over a wider area of the carpet and requires no modifications to the slide rollers,,etc.

The existing two gas artists are 80 lb struts and when tested with the heavier new mattress worked just fine to support the mattress when lifted up for access to under the mattress storage

Since we picked up 3 inches on each side the wife wanted some nite tables on each side of the bed .

I didn’t want anything permanently secured because I wanted to be able to access the areas along the edges of the slide to inspect for water leaks, etc

The stands just slide into place and are held in place by the mattress and bedspread

I will update in a few days the finished look of the two nite stands once I get them sanded, stained and varnished..

39 degrees outside today with a 35 mph wind so too cold to work in the shop today.

Anyways the images might give someone some ideas if they are wanting to upgrade their mattress and some things to consider regarding the heavier weight of a new mattress

Looks good…I rounded the corners of the plywood at the foot of the bed..the pointy corners were not the best idea when they cut the plywood

We (actually my trim carpenter friend) did exactly the same thing. I was the helper. When he was finished it looks factory, or better. AND, DW and I can access the sides to change sheets!

Finished King to Queen mattress conversion in our Alpine. the 14 inch mattress will be awesome..

Two night stands in place .. they simply slide in and can be removed for cleaning and routine inspection for evidence of water leaks, etc..

Two pieces of 1x8 pine, used the router on the front and edges to give a bit more finished look.. oil stain and varnish... cost about $14..

my wood skills are terrible but it gives us two much needed night stands...

Now the wife deciding on new pillows and pillow case covers...

I wanted the ones shown on the last image... that was a no go from her...
