The same is not always true with conventional trailer toyhaulers. We have some members (5 or 6 years ago) with previous "technology toy haulers" who actually could not load their garage without "unloading the tongue weight". A couple of them actually had to resort to loading sand bags under the front bed storage space just to increase the tongue weight enough to get it back up to 9 or 10 % of the trailer weight.

The same holds true for trailers with a "front garage" that's in the bunk room. Loading 1000 pounds of motorcycles or a ATV and a dirt bike in the front will "load up the tongue weight by almost the total cargo weight. Frightening stuff if you're not expecting it...

Those floorplans, I'd guess, were a modification of an existing trailer floorplan with no consideration of axle position on the frame build. Keystone usually designs a floorplan or a series of floorplans that use one "standardized chassis model" and, if anything, they "cut off 3 or 5 or 7 feet of the rear chassis rail for trailers "in that series"...

My guess would be that years ago, when toyhaulers were first becomming popular, Keystone engineered a trailer using an existing chassis, didn't move the axle position, realized after several of those models got into the field, that there's "more to trailer cargo positioning" than they initially suspected...

Today's tongue type toy haulers are not nearly as "sensitive to weight placement" as earlier models, and fifth wheel toy haulers are long enough with sufficient pin weight compared to trailer mass, that loading the garage doesn't affect towability nearly as much as it once did in travel trailer type toyhaulers....

I'd suspect that there are some "ultra-lite toyhaulers" that do still have dramatic differences in weight distribution adjustments based on towing with the toys or towing without the toys.
That ^^^^ would be me! I remember it well and stuck with it until I got enough weight up there for it to tow well....what a battle it was though!

LOL....no problem mentioning names with me. I've shared the story of my woes to others seeking advice, all in an effort to help them too. And yes, those days are long gone for me.....now it's off to do more mods, maint. for our trip out west in the fall, and finishing my new aux. fuel tank for the truck. Now I just need some better weather!

Hi. Was just at the dealership planning to order my F350 6.7 Turbo DWR extended cab Laramie in May. My 5fer is a Carbon 348 with a GVWR of about 17,000.

I have a question about a few things:

4.1 or 3.55??? Which is recommended and what exactly does this decision effect?

Alternator choices: any reason to order higher/heavier duty alternator?

I looked at the payload on a 2021 F350 Laramie DRW on the lot and it was about 5600lbs.

I would get the 4:10 gears ..your fiver is pretty heavy.
You would get a little better fuel mileage with the 3:55 but overall towing with a heavy fifth wheel may suffer.
The 4:10 will be easier to tow from a dead stop and towing up hills .
Your rpms will be a little higher and that will slightly effect fuel mileage but not much.
Your overall towing capacity will increase with 4:10 gears as well.
If your ever going to be towing in the mountains you will benefit from the 4:10 gears.
Most people choose between 3:73 and 4:10.
And lastly I know some of the truck manufacturers are switching to 8 and 10 speed transmissions, that is supposed to help with towing and fuel mileage but I prefer the stoutness of 4:10
Heavier duty alternator couldn’t hurt if it’s just a little extra

I've got a '16 F350 Dually and it has the 3:73 rear end in it. I tow a 20,000 lb GVWR trailer that is usually loaded to somewhere around 18,500 lbs, depending on whether I take my Can Am Spyder or not. I've not had any issues so far and I live in the "little mountains" area around Knoxville, TN. We are headed out west this fall to the real mountains, so we'll see how it goes out there. Frankly, I'm not concerned at all with the setup as it is.

As a note: the difference is roughly 220 RPM on my truck between 3:73 & 4:11

The final drive in the transmission is .67 and tire size is 31.5" it's just math...

The 2015 6.7 diesel in my truck gets the most efficient power between 1800 & 2000 RPM more than 2000 and the fuel consumption goes up quickly for little gain in speed.

I generally set my cruise at 1800-1850 which is roughly 67-69 mph

My '13 Duramax with 3.73 years was about the same! The sweet spot towing was 1700-1800 rpm which was approximately 68 mph. At this rpm I could average 9.5-11.0 mpg & tow all day without breaking a sweat. Add speed or rpm & the mpg would drop to 7-9.

What do you think is the sweet spot for trading up to a new truck?..

Life lessons!

Separately, do you guys know what kind of a hit you take to gas mileage going from SRW with 3.55 to DRW with 4.10? 10%? 20%?

For reference, I average about 18-20 in my SRW when driving normally. I'm guessing that cuts in half when towing.
I have a 2017 F350 DRW Dually.....front tires at 80 psi, back tires at 65psi. Mine is a Lariat, Fx4 version and I pull a Keystone Avalanche 396BH 5th wheel which is at 16,500 GVWR and I believe around 13800 Dry Weight.

My truck handles payload absolutely no problem but mine may be 3k or so lighter than a Toy Hauler version.

Towing in TX and TX hill country I am getting 9-10 mpg ......and when not towing, more around 15 mpg.

Am I crazy or does this not seem that much higher than my SRW which is rated at 4140?

Stats for the 5er

GVWR = 19000
Dry Weight = 15185
Hitch Weight = 3390

Should I be looking for a DRW build with more payload than that?
Also keeping in mind that only about 25% of the total GVWR of your 5th wheel os going onto the payload of your trucks rear axles. So an increase of 1500 lbs on truck payload numbers adds 5,000 lbs more capability to the size 5th wheel (plus all the extras you are carrying) than your current truck.

The 13.9 mpg is overall for the 5400 miles on the odometer. I've seen as high as 19mpg. Never look at the lows! lol

It’s more than it seems -?what I mean is the stability of towing with a dually is even better than what the payload amount shows.

Well I will add that first you are increasing payload of the SRW by just over 26%.
The difference while only 1,092# and the difference in GVWR is 1,600# where did the extra 508# go. well two extra wheels and tires. Then likely a larger rear axle. Larger fuel tank.

You will fine a BIG difference in stability!
