Furnace Questions

I went out this afternoon and unplugged my Cougar from the 110/120 volt power I use during storage. Now on battery power only, I opened one of my propane tanks and then turned on the heat. Everything operated as it should and a quick check indicated about 108 degree heat coming from my floor registers.

1: Is there any problem with letting my furnace operate on battery power only for a short time? I fully understand that the battery would not last long powering the furnace.

2: If I turn on the furnace some day and hear the fan blowing but have no heat - what are the troubleshooting procedures? Is there a pilot light that I can manually light?

3: Is there any problem with running the heat with 110/120 power for while I work inside my Cougar?

#1 no problem, depending on the battery and temp set you could get a overnight use use on the battery.

#2 Likely you will not be able to hand light the furnace, all depends on the furnace and reasons it may fail? there could be many.

#3 Run it while plugged in, it works that way same as at a park. Why would you not have it plugged in to run anything in the trailer unless it is not available. Having the trailer plugged in and having the power switch if you have one turned on will charge the battery and run everything, not all at once but most items.
How do you use the power system while camping? It's the same at the lot. Shore power is best.

Thanks Ken for your detailed responses.
I will certainly use shore power when it is available.
I do keep my 5er plugged in to 110v at home.

1, I have two 12Vdc batteries installed so I can run the furnace off the batteries when boon docking for a weekend.

3. The furnace "purges" the combustion area before igniting and runs after burner operation to purge it again.

The only problem I have had with RV furnaces is the "sail switch". There is a switch operated by the fan operation to ensure there is air flow prior to supplying gas to the combustion area.

Bob - thanks for your response. While my furnace currently runs without issue, your sail switch information is exactly what I am looking for - items to troubleshoot - what could go wrong.

I'm just thinking proactive so that if I have some problems in remote British Columbia I'll at least have a few things I can check.

Most common reason for the fan to low but not put out heat is when you leave the furnace on and run all the propane out. I do this regularly when hanging out in the RV with the kids while at home (kind of like camping but don't have to leave the driveway). For some reason I just can't remember to turn it off

We see more limit switch failures than sail switch failures....just sayin.
