Short wave radio interference

A neighbor of mine has a short wave radio. When he's on it, we can hear him talking thru our AM FM radio and it causes some of our lights to flash on and off. The lights were in the off position but flash on and off. Any suggestions on how to eliminate this interference? We both live in our travel trailers full time.

Glenn54, Howdy;

Basic question is ... Have you talked to him about the problem you are
experiencing? You might ask if he has a filter he might install to help
eliminate the problem he is causing you. You might also ask him if he might
be able to get by using a wee bit less power or have an open discussion
with him about his hobby. Several avenues you can take and not get under
his skin. You might also call the FCC (Federal Communications Commision),
known as Uncle Charlie to the CBers to see what might be done also. They
may supply some talking points you can use when you have a friendly chat
with the fellow.

I assume it's ham radio or CB, the term shortwave is usually associated with receive only radios. Ham radios with a proper antenna normally don't cause interference however CB radios when run with illegal amplifiers will cause all kind of issues. Talk to him, if he's a good ham he will most likely do his best to work with you.

do any of his vehicles have a special lic plate with his call sign? If so he has an fcc lic and likely a legit operator. As a lic'd operator he also has a responsibility to operate his station with proper care. Lic'd or not anyone operating radio have a responsibility to use the proper freq's and the proper power levels and are subject to prosecution if they are not.

Sounds like he's putting out some watts. Tin foil hats might be in order...

Licensed here, no special plates. Legally I'm allowed up to 1500 watts but I don't own an amp nor have the antenna system where an amp would help. I do normally run up to 100 watts with no complaints.

Glenn I would just politely ask him if he is aware that he is causing this. Depending on his answer, I wouldn't hesitate to call the FCC. If you're in the city limits of League City you may call the police non-emergency number and see if they can talk to him about disturbing your peace. Have you discussed this with neighbors?

What is a Tin foil hat? How is it used?

I talked to him this afternoon. He seems like a nice guy but didn't offer to do anything that would help. It doesn't happen that often so I'm not inclined to take any action at this point.

yeah, i would make the next action to call them but it is an option. You might pose the question this way. Tell him he is bleeding over on your electronics and would like to know if there is something to do to counter it.

If he is close by there might be very little you or he could do esp if you are in the transmit path. Even direction antennas have side lobes that push rf behind, down and to the sides. Maybe ask him to moderate his xmit hours to a later or earlier time frame.
