city water hook up over filled freshwater tank

I don't know how or why but sure did make mess. We used the TT a week ago and It was fine on the holding tank. This past weekend we started out on the freshwater holding tank and it was ok....I had the hose hooked up to city water but not turned on...She ran out of water in the holding tank Friday morning and I turned on the city water things were still ok till Saturday mornig I seen the hose dripping at the trailer went to look at it and it was water coming out of the fill and vent for the holding tank and leaked back into the trailer at the vent and fill tube... what a mess...also for some reason it was wet under the bathroom sink. Found no loose line or anything under there but the outside shower is right there on the outside and it was wet in there. We finished up the weekend on the holding tank and things seem ok but the pump seems to be abit louder than normal. Anyone have any idea on what to do to trouble shoot this? Maybe a check valve in the pump? Before we left the campground I drained the holding tank and the low points just for my piece of mind.

Just a wild guess but do you have a lever to switch between city water and tank fill? If so when you turned on the city water did you leave the lever in the tank fill position so you were still filling the tank and it overfilled it? Like I said, just a wild guess.
