what is it?

Saw a 2002 Cougar in Humble TX in an ad by dealer on CL. Note the very large appendage at the rear. Not sure what that would do to the rather delicate frame on a 2002 Cougar but the thing that got me is the grate up above and to the rear of the emergency window. I am getting a headache thinking about what that must be... any guesses?

It looks like an air conditioner that's "stuck inside except for the rear vent". If you look in the first photo, you can see a cable running along the edge of the EPDM roofing and then doing a "quick divert" down the side, just above that "thing in the wall".. My guess would be that's an extension cord/cable that they attached to the trailer, drilled a hole in the sidewall to route it into the trailer upper bedroom, and use it to power the A/C unit. In that same photo, there's a cable under the trailer, just forward of the roof ladder. It looks like it's got a plug on it, likely to plug into a generator stashed on that "monster rack" and intended to power the air conditioner.

From the looks of it, there's several other wires/things hanging under the trailer, around the rear of the slide, so I'd guess there's some "good 'ole boy modifications" that may or may not meet RVIA standards

It definitely looks like an indoor air-return vent, especially from the corrosion. If it's hooked up as an air return but not located inside the RV, the owner is getting substandard cooling.

Looks like a total "hack" job to me. If it was around the corner I might go look at it just so I could feel good about my own "Hillbilly engineering" but sure wouldn't waste the fuel if it was over 5 miles away.

I think it is one of those “I am going to keep this thing forever so who cares what it looks like” kinda jobs

I bet that rear rack with 90% of the left rear leg cut out some kind of wiggles going down the road, especially if that tire rack hanging off of it has a tire mounted. On it.

It was the only way he could get the handlebars past the entrance.

That wire hanging at the back of the slide is AC for the two (kind of dumb) 110V light fixtures in the slide. It also goes to a 110V outlet in the dinette seat to the rear of the camper. If memory serves, it also has the 12V as there is a junction at the frame and the 12V (a sconce light in the center of the slide on the wall) uses 12V).

I really can't see how an A/C unit in the bedroom could possibly not drool condensation all over the floor unless the butt end were sticking out and the vent looking thing precludes it.

My guess it's a "redneck wide" size tire.

may actually be a evaporative cooler….especially if they camp out in the desert and boondock …much easier power requirements and simple cooling to lower the temp in the rv

But the real question is whether or not you’ve put an offer on the rig yet? How much would you pay…but wait, there’s more…

I knew a couple who did a lot of travel to dog shows and kept several dogs in kennels inside the trailer. They made a similar rig on the back of their trailer to hold a generator that ran while they were traveling and kept the AC on for the dogs.
