How about some clues like make, model and year of camper. Awninh make? Connected to shore power or just battery?

It is on my 2017 sprinter, now sure of the make of the awning. the thing started working again this evening after the sun was off it. We were on shore power.

There should be a sticker on the awning tube with the make & model. It may be working now but something caused the issue. Mechanical things don't heal or fix themselves. IMO it's better to find out why in-between trips vs not being able to retract the awning when you're packing up to go home.

Take the cover off the motor and make sure the gearbox is fully engaged. The awning tube, center (drive) rod has been known to round off the flat edge.
