AUX fuel tank

I've been looking at Auxiliary diesel fuel tanks for my truck. Just wanting to see what everyone is using in theirs. I'd like and under the bed rails on about 75 + gallons. I found an aluminum 80 gals wedge shape one that would fit under my bed rails. But it's more then I wanted to spend. Looks like no matter what way I go they all tend to be pricey.

fuel tank

i just said the heck with it and had a titan tank installed where the fuel tank was.

i like the extra fuel range and i don't have another piece of stuff in the back of my short box truck.

just spend the $$$ and replace your tank if you plan on keeping the truck.

I considered it seriously and 75 extra gallons is nice if you have 600lbs. + of spare payload to give up. We are usually ready for a break after 250 - 300 miles of towing anyway so I decided to do without. Plenty of truck stops out there.

Yes we normally stop too after 3-4 hrs of driving to use the bathrooms. We also have plenty of payload to spare now that we stepped up to a 3500HD Dually. Part of the reason I did a DRW vs SRW 1 ton is because of the possibility of an AUX tank some day. We looked at Replacement tanks also. But they are extremely expensive and I'd get less range then with an in bed tank. Guess I need to just pony up and buy the tank that fits my needs.

Due to factors that I did not fully think through, I had great difficulty in finding an AUX diesel tank. I ended up getting what I needed at a good price, but there was no way to plumb it into my existing system. I purchased a transfer pump and refill when stopped for meals or restroom breaks. With my stock tank and aux holding tank, I can go a full day of driving without having to visit a station. Great peace of mind. I still will fuel up if the location where we stop allows me to maneuver without great stress-otherwise I wait until we get where we are going and unhitch and fill both tanks. Vacations have become more enjoyable without worrying about where/when/how I am going to refuel. Good luck!

Added a transferflow tank to our Ram 3500. We like stopping at rest areas versus truck stops. And having the option of using the RV restroom is a plus. We just like being on the road more than spending time at truck stops or looking for a station that can handle our rig. The tank replaced the stock tank and gave us 25 more gallons.

RDS makes several nice tanks that are DOT approved. The best place I have found to buy them is Northern Tool. They also sell an install kit that plumbs the tank into the existing filler hose, I think the kit is about $65. I'm going with the 95 gal L shaped tank, it fits nicely in the bed and my tool box still fits over the lower part. Plan on spending about $700-800 for a decent tank, I've never been able to find anything cheaper that is worth buying.

Dee Zee and RDS are the few I've been looking at, they seem to be the most reasonable price.

Just so you know, the transfer tanks (pump and hose that drops into the top cap) are not DOT approved tanks. I don't think it's a big deal for the average person, but if you ever have a need to get a DOT inspection it won't pass. They have to be plumbed into your existing tank (at least that is what I was told).

I looked at Titan for $1,200, and thought too much. I have a canopy so I don't think an in-bed tank works. And I don't tow long distances that much so I have just gone with 2 yellow jerry cans for those days I am towing a fair ways. Whole lot less money for a bit more inconvenience.

I went with the Titan replacement tank. It increased my capacity from 37.5 gal to 65 gal.

I can still use my large bait box (what it was called by dealer years ago when I bought it used at a bargain as it smell like fish). Box is side to side, 72 inches by 24 inches wide and at least 20 inches deep.

I would rather have the extra large tool box to store items for possible truck/travel needs such as tie down straps, fuel additives, extra bottle jack, DEF, fuel filter, tools (no room behind rear seats now days) and blankets to lay on if need to crawl under truck or trailer along with other stuff. This way I don't have to wish I had remembered to bring it instead of saying darn it, I left it in the scuttle of the travel trailer/5'r.

With the long bed, i can still put my Champion 3500kw generator between the tool box and Ford/Reese Elite 5'r hitch.

Keep in mind that changing to a larger tank comes at a cost. We talk on this forum to no end about weight capacities. Simply adding a large tank in the bed of your truck may come up to quite a load. Steel tank? Maybe 175 lbs. 75 gallons of diesel? 535 lbs. Transfer pump? Maybe 35 pounds. I agree that switching your little dinky Ford 26 gallon tank for a Titan 50 gallon tank doesn't make much difference, but the in-bed tank might.

I should have plenty GVWR left with my new truck. My pin weight hovers around 2500lbs +/- a few 100 lbs and I have a GVWR of 13,000 lbs on my truck. So weight shouldn't be a problem even with a 80-100 gal tank.

I just took a 75 gal out and sold it because it took up too much room. I replaced it with a 37 gal that I bought from TSC and welded in a bung and better mount brackets. After all the welding I sanded it and painted it with basecoat/clearcoat the same color as the truck, Olympic white. I have it plumbed in to the main tank with a manual shutoff valve. This with the truck tank gives me 71 total gallons.

Aux. Fuel Tank

Check Northern Hyd. RDS 45 gal. tank under $500, 60"W x 21"T x 9"D ,no problem in shortbox truck , then either use a transfer pump when you stop for breaks or the install kit $59. that's what i use with a 12 volt valve to control when i fill truck tank. stops the gas gauge from going to E when it stays on full to long. 26 gal truck tank 45 gal Aux tank you can count on 60 gal usable with out stopping!! worked great out west and use at home find cheapest fuel (gasbuddy.com) around then go fill up!! paid for itself already.

tank

i installed a 37 gallon rds auxillary tank & install kit for about 425 including shipping,got it on ebay from a salvage yard,plumbed it into truck fill hose.worked great all the way to florida,however after an hour truck fuel guage will read dead empty.shut it off and turn it on and it reads again ,no big deal.i must admit i can only seem to get 27 gallons in it but my truck only holds 26

Fuel tank/ toolbox combo

I had this tank installed and has worked great. I have found it is really about 33 gallon. I have a manual shut-off and draining is about 6-8 gal/hour max at start, so I open the valve when I stop with less than 1/2 tank. Just don't stop for the night and leave the valve open if the main tank can't hold the remainder aux tank. This tank fits under the bed cover and in one season has paid over 1/2 the cost in fuel saving plus the lack of stress. It is a good investment if you have the weight capacity to carry it.

Any of you guys with the in-bed transfer tanks also use a bed cap? In the winter I put a cap on and don't want to remove the aux fuel to fit the cap on. Right now I have to remove my over the rail tool box but looking at a few of these aux/toolbox combo's they doesn't seem to go over the rails at all but I can't see the back. Do the back of any of these still attach to the rails at all?

I looked at both Titan and Transfer Flow OEM replacement and did not feel the money was worth 20 gals more for Transfer Flow and the Titan is 65 gals but I read to many horror stories on the flange setup on the type tank and water getting in. I went to my local Ford dealer and sure enough, 3 issues with Titan OEM replacement tanks with fuel quality issues. In the end, I wanted the increase capacity as I am like others. I like the ability to get where I want and use rest areas, walmarts, etc. So I went with Transfer Flow 37 gal in bed. Best of all worlds, doubles capacity to 75 gal, weight is little less than 400 lbs with full load and it is protected under my tonneau cover.

We just added a Dee Zee 40 gal aluminum tank with gravity feed that we can control from inside the cab, only takes up 9 inches of box space and gives us plenty of capacity "65 usable gallons'. We previously carried 4 5 gall cans that was nothing but a smelly pain in the rear.
