Safety issue??
When it comes to lighting the oven is the pilot off all the time done so as it's a safety issue?

Open the oven, no pilot, light the pilot, turn off oven after use and pilot goes off
Is there a reason that the pilot stays alight and is this done as a safety pro caution?

Oh ok. That helps....
Your oven has an OFF position and a PILOT position... To light, obviously turn it to the pilot position... And then move it to the temp you wish to cook...
When you're done cooking, you have two choices...
You may either turn it off by turning it back (and leaving it at) the pilot position.... OR you can press it just a bit further to turn it fully off.
There is no safety reason to do one over another if your equipment is in good repair.
Many times I turn mine off by simply returning it to pilot and leaving it there for the duration of my trip. Saves me from having to light it the next time I use it.

Thanks for the reply I didn't know that the pilot would stay on but I do now
I assumed that from what I read about everyone complaining about their knees and lighting the oven that it always shuts off.

For what it's worth…. I leave ours on in the winter. In the summer it can be an unwanted heat source.

I guess I can add this question here as it's a safety issue as well.
When it comes to leaving windows open a bit at night with the furnace on how many do you leave open and how wide?

I leave my two ceiling vents (kitchen and bathroom) wide open most of the time. But not because of the furnace. The furnace vents to the outside.
The pilot, however, doesn't. So I turn it off. When I leave it on, I don't like the smell that accumulates. I don't know if the smell is normal. And I don't mind lighting the pilot when I need to. After the first time, the pilot is pretty easy to light.

I thought about leaving the ceiling vents open but when it's windy and raining it'll all come in.
I'm leaving the window in the kitchen open about 4 inches and so far I haven't died!
I've read that people can die from lack of oxygen and thought that the furnace can cause this.

What pilot are you talking about? The furnace should have electronic ignition as should the hot water heater and the refrigerator. The only pilot I'm aware of is the on in the oven.
If there is an odor, are you sure it's from a pilot?

The oven pilot light (getting back on track here).
I'm pretty sure the odor is from the pilot. I notice no odor because the pilot is almost always off. On the few occasions I leave the pilot on for future use, I notice an exhaust type smell. Turning the pilot off makes the smell go away.

OK Now that makes sense. I was not sure of what pilot you were talking about and you were smelling
Are you sure the pilot is adjusted properly and not producing soot? That may be what you smell. Occasionally a bad pilot assembly is produced and installed. I don't think the manufacturers function check very many of their products, so a bad one is possible.
Also, you may have not used your oven enough to burn off the "new smell" from the paint on the underside of the oven floor. I've not noticed an odor from ours, but that's not to say mine is different, just not noticed. With the oven, at least you can turn the pilot off at the knob and not be inconvenienced. I'd think that over time whatever is causing the odor will burn away.
