Hitch Issue To Be Aware Of

Wanted to pass this on in hopes of saving you the hitch challenges I had in the purchase of my new trailer.

The hitch on my 2013 F350 truck is rated for 18,500 lb towing with 1,850 lb of tongue weight when using the 2.5” receiver. When using the 2” receiver adapter, the tow rating on the hitch drops to 12,500 lb and 1,250 lb of tongue weight (using WD hitch).

While working out the details of the sale, I told the salesman (via email) that I needed a 14,000/ 1,400 lb hitch with the 2.5” shank because of the trailer's tongue weight. He wrote back agreeing that was the correct hitch weight rating for the trailer but he apparently missed the part about the 2.5” shank.

Yesterday we drove 100 miles to pick up the trailer only to find that the hitch they had for us was the wrong size and they did not have the 2.5” shank in stock. They are going to special order it and hopefully, the right parts will be available by next weekend so we can pick up the trailer and bring it home.

Good point, my brother has a Chevy 2500HD diesel and he also has the 2 1/2" hitch, he hated the fact that they (chevy) gave him an sleeve so a 2" hitch would work. He tows a small equipment trailer for his rocket stuff, yes rocket stuff, these are huge toy rockets I found a 2 1/2" with the 5" drop he need at Northern tool, he said it is so much more solid feeling now that there isn't all the play in the hitch.

I have a 2500 with the 2 1/2 receiver as well. With my smaller bumper pull trailer the wieght was not a concern but there was more clanking around with the sleeve and a 2" ball mount.
