Welcome to the forum

to the forum from the mountains of Virginia. We, too, have a 5er and my husband says they are much easier to tow than a TT.

Travler -
I think that, for most people who have towed both a TT and a 5ver, they would say that towing a 5th wheel is preferable. You can include me in this and I'm sure you will eventually find the same.
Since you didn't give us any information about your new Cougar 5th, it's hard to comment on whether or not your Silverado is a good match for it or not.
Welcome to the group - glad to have you with us.

I purchased a 2012 Cougar X lite 26sab...dry weight is 7040 with a capacity of 3026..hitch is 1190.. The carrying capacity seems high and dont think I will ever get there.. But if it has space..which it does then maybe we will get there. I am pretty sure I wont have any trouble but just trying to crunch some numbers to make sure i am in limits of the TV. Manual says Max tow is 9900 lbs..if fully loaded then I would be over..

You should be fine. 5er is rated for a 1/2t although I think a 1/2t would be maxed out. It's usually the payload capacity on the 1/2t that is the limiting factor and with a 3/4t you should have a nice stable ride. Your gasser will mean a little slower acceleration and uphill power but your retired so no hurry, right. We hav ethe same trailer and 3/4t but with a diesel and we really don't notice the trailer is back there.

I have the same trailer and had a 1/2 ton Ford (2009) to pull it. Had the tow package 5.4 . Pulled it to Florida with no problems. Went to the east coast and got into some pretty big hills in Maine and Vermont. Wife made me sell it and by a 3/4 ton diesel... darn. Half ton was pretty well maxed out but it did pull it. I don't even know it is behind me now. The only way to know for sure how much it weighs is to weigh it at a scale. I keep my weigh ticket in the glove box. I'm way under now with the 3/4 ton.

by the way we love our 26SAB and have not had any real major issues with it. All my questions have been answered here.

P.S. I added another leaf spring to the rear end and it helped

I recently traded in a 28ft 5th wheel for a 34 foot TT.

Both setups have their pluses and minuses.

5th Wheel -
Pro: much easier to hook up, much less susceptible to sway.
Con: huge hitch in the bed, most 5th wheels are MUCH taller than a TT.
This is why we switched back to a TT. The extra height of the FW makes it harder to tow at Interstate speeds, reducing gas mileage.

Also, the TT is more generally maneuverable than the 5th wheel. The geometry of the FW setup makes it trickier to back into very tight spaces. Also, the FW does not follow the same track as the TV around a corner and made getting around tight corners with trees in smaller State Parks challenging. I find the TT, even 6 feet longer, easier to maneuver in tight spaces.

Having the bed of the truck back for bikes, etc is a nice change of pace now having a TT again.

Just my 2 cents worth...
