Battery Question

Fairly new Cougar, with OTG package, batteries have gone bad and need replacing, The original batteries are two Continental 24TM AGM 550CCA. Would a larger capacity battery improve RV functionality and are their any limitations not to exceed? Like could a larger capacity battery overload some of the more sensitive RV components? Any recommendations? Any and all comments would be greatly appreciated.

Bigger is better so whatever will fit is good.

I agree with Rickv. Bigger is better. Welcome from northern MN.

Go with true deep cycle batteries. As your originals list cold cranking amps (CCA), they are not.

A lot of people wire two 6v golf cart batteries (Costco is a popular supplier) in series.

Go to "User CP" in the upper left corner of the page. Select "edit signature" on the left side then fill in the box with the details of your tow vehicle, trailer and whatever else you want to provide. It helps everyone when trying to respond.

In a very, very simple explanation: The answer is "No". A larger battery will not hurt anything. They are designed to spit out 12 volts DC, nothing more. Larger batteries give you longer running time, or more amp draw for a longer period of time. That's the difference.

Thank you. I was hoping that that would be the predominant response. Anybody have any experience with the Duracell line offered at Sam's?

Thank you for that explanation. It was my thinking, but considering the expense of an overload, I wanted to make sure.

The battery is an energy storage device, much like a gas tank. Having more energy to draw from his not harmful in any way as long as the voltage is correct. There are a few ratings associated with batteries.

First is the voltage, this is self explanatory.
Secondly is cold cranking amps for a battery designed to start an engine. This is the maximum number of amps available if the battery is fully charged to operate a starter motor on an engine. Typically the most amps that will fit in a battery that will physically fit into the battery tray of a vehicle the better. This does not apply to RV batteries that are true deep cycle batteries.
Third is amp hour rating. This is an important number when dealing with true deep cycle batteries for an RV. The higher the amp hours the longer the battery will last under a constant load. With any flooded cell lead acid battery the "useable" amp hour rating is about 1/2 of the rated amp hours. If you discharge this type of battery past 50% of it's capacity you risk permanently damaging the battery and shortening it's life.
