Everyone that I've known (including me back in 1972) who used or uses that type sway control has to remove them before backing up. It's in the troubleshooting guide in the HF instructions....
The problem: When you back up, you turn at a greater angle and bind the "compressing bar". As it gets to the end of travel, it puts pressure on the attachments (both front and rear). At that point, either one of the balls will fail or, as you've indicated, the bolts will strip or break...
So, any time you're backing up, remove the bars or you'll be buying new bars and possibly a new/rewelded trailer A frame.....
