keep a truck past warranty

My 2019 GMC diesel dually denali 45000 miles is in its 4th year. Went to my dealer and bought a premier bumper to bumper warranty good for 7 more years or 120000 miles. Cost just over $3000. Just replaced the radio with full screen worth $1200 with installation. It pays for everything except routine maintenance. Not the GMC warranty but guaranteed good for every GMC dealer and any shop if GMC dealer isn't available. Just for your consideration.

My 2016 F350 Lariat, dually is shadow black, my 2024 Cougar 320RDS is the phantom grey Midnight Edition. Even the rims on the truck and rv are black. Based on your comments, you would not like my color scheme.

Anywho;
I bought my truck new in Aug of 2015.
Sticker - $68,775.00 (all the bells/whistles available at the time)
Paid - $68,966.00 including sales tax, title, puck style 18k hitch, spray in bedliner, extended warranty, service contract (paint, glass, tires, wheels, dents), all season floor mats
Traded in a 2006 F250 Amarillo Special Edition
Financed approximately $40k. Paid off long ago.

Recalls - 4
CCV oil separator assembly
DEF tank heater
Emissions (reprogram PCM)
Airbag warning light

Total maintenance costs - $8230.44 (half of which is new tires, new rims, new batteries and converting to LED headlights/taillights/fog lights/ etc

Based on my expenses and experience, I would keep your truck and pay yourself monthly payments. (As others have mentioned)

Think about this, $1000 monthly payment for 36 months (typical warranty), after 10 trucks you will have spent $360,000. That’s a house and all you will have in the end is a 3 year old truck.

All of the Big 3 have good powerplants (diesel) but I gravitate to the Cummins.

Ram has the best interiors by every account - I LIKE the interior I am surrounded with more than worrying about the miniscule power differences (Cummins is best IMO). Emissions? Never give it a thought. 7.3 Godzilla vs diesel? What is the truck going to be used for? Does it need that 1000lbs of torque? Gas engines these days will run past 100k without blinking. How many miles do you want it to run? I have no need for a truck after 100k miles gas or diesel. Trucks have changed, interiors have changed, electronics have changed....I just don't do that but others do and I appreciate that.

You're putting a lot of thought, most needlessly IMO, into what I always look at a "Pick what I want/need at the best price" kind of thing. I don't want a Ford - their interiors just don't "have it". Same goes for GM. Think it through but don't let it get so complicated that it binds you up. Bought lots and lots of new vehicles - cut it down to the important aspects.

I could not imagine going through the time and expense of getting a new truck every 3 to 4 years. It the thing does the job then there is no “need”. If you like to change trucks, then it’s your desire and your dough.

My two cents.

Nah. Actually nothing to it other than finding what you want these days - really no expense involved. Used to buy 1 or 2 a year but now I've backed off to 4-6 years. I actually enjoy building out the one I want then looking for it. Don't have the patience I used to though; used to wander all the car lots "looking" (loved it, DW hated it). Nowadays if I can't find what I want pretty quick I have a dealer find it and bring it to me.

I guess I have a different twist on "stuff". A truck, like money, is a tool. It can be an asset but first and foremost, to me, it's a tool to do what I want it to accomplish. When that job is done, when I got my "money's worth" IMO, I just don't care. I don't particularly like to "change trucks/vehicles" these days (used to) but I DETEST vehicle failures, inconvenience, trip interruptions etc. A newer vehicle helps mitigate those concerns...sort of like insurance. Just the way I view it.

My GMC 2007 Duramax Classic has been paid for since 2009... I have out a few set of tires , batteries, serpintine belt and idler pulleys and just recently installed a new Hydra boost for the power brakes..

Still running stock.

Cant see the absolute insane prices for a new truck that wont do anything more than mine does now

Bought son in laws 2017 F250 a little over 2 months ago. They bought it with about 6K miles from the local dealer. Was his demo and well taken care of. I used it and rode in this vehicle for 7 yrs. Same paint scheme as the '17 F350 dually I had and sorry I sold it. Son in law and daughter sold it to the old man at a good price and truck had 102K miles on the clock. I had the shocks changed and new brakes on the front. Also bought 2 new batteries and new lug nuts. Looks and runs like new and with the Lariat Ultimate package it has all the gadgets. Put about a thousand miles on it so far and getting over 20 mpg running on our 55mph highways around here. Getting 22 to 23 mpg running at 67 mph which seems to be the sweet spot on the highway. Towing our 8K pound camper close to 11 mpg at 65 mph. I'll roll the dice not buying any warranty since I'll probably only put 5K miles a year on it at most.

I like black vehicles but like to change things up every now and then…My first new vehicle was a 1990 Ford laramie f150…black with a silver gray rocker panel and factory aluminum wheels…i washed and waxed it multiple times a week and it looked better then new when i sold it….had a 2008 Black escalade that i purchased new and had for 4 or 5 years and it looked like new…i think it only had like 29000 miles?…and now my 2020 black night edition dually…I like black but its a lot of work to keep it looking sharp

Yes the prices are unbelievable….If you would have told me in 2005 what a truck would cost in 2024 i wouldn’t have believed you…Was looking at google street view of my neighborhood today and you can choose from a timeline of dates over the years….mine go back to 2007 and there is my beautiful blue with gray rocker panel ram 2500 shortbed 5.9 cummins…perfect stance. best truck i ever owned sitting in my driveway…man i wish i still had that…Sold in 2009…tried to buy it back from the guy but he wanted more then i sold it to him for so i passed..stupid mistake….Google street view is like going back in time…i could navigate my neighborhood house by house like it was 2007…grandfathers car still parked in front of his house and my father in laws truck in front of his…some of my neighbors are forever immortalized along the way…kinda interesting and different then just pictures because it’s random and unstaged and how it was on that day in 2007
