Trailer porpoising

OK , wife's description, not mine.

Second trip with the new 23RB and Ford F150. This trip we had the two bikes in the truck, <700 lbs > and the trailer pulled better then ever. On most roads you would not even know it was there.

We did however hit one small section of road < concrete > near Buffalo that almost made me sea sick. The road had seams or joints in it every 25 feet or so. At 65 PMH the trucks front end would compress while the back went up , then as the front went up the rear would go down. Once I slowed to about 40 MPH it would stop. No sway at all but the bouncing would get worse once it started until it felt un safe to drive.

Other then one section of road only about 15 miles the ride felt solid. 70 mph , one hand on the wheel and transports going buy with no sway or weird pulling.

Any ideas ? I have never heard of this before.

Randy

Randy -
This up and down movement on concrete sections of highway that have expansion joints spaced in them is not uncommon and no cause to worry. At times, it almost feels as though you have a flat tire on your TT.
If you were going at 65-60 mph, it probably made it feel worse but even slowing down really doesn't help all that much. At 70 mph....well...... anything can happen to your tires at that speed.....

Thanks for the reply's guys. I guess there is not much I can do about it. I could not drive too far like that, I think I would be sick.

I do have to keep reminding myself to keep it around 100 kmh. Without the trailer I guess I have a bit of a lead foot at times.

The trip to Chapman State park was a success

It's all a matter of harmonics. Length of wheel base, length from rear truck wheels to trailer wheels, spread of trailer axles and length of concrete slabs . When all the stars align, hang on tight. Sometimes it starts out as a slight thump, thump and stays fairly mild. Other times it grabs you and does not want to let go. Funny thing is we always seem to encounter this right after stopping for a nice meal.

Hank -
Sounds like this condition is something that might start right after stopping for a meal that wasn't so nice. But, like you said, "It's all a matter of harmonics". Hopefully, it will all stay "mild".

Does you TT have shocks??

The two best things i have done for the ride of my TV and 5er are a set of Bilstien 5100's on the truck. Then installing shocks on both axles of the 5er! I towed a section of asphalt over OLD concrete. I could fel the joints in the truck, but no feel of the 5er pitching the pin.
