7 way plug installation in bed

Hi,
I want to move my 7 way plug to inside the bed. Can someone please tell me if there is an extension that goes from the old 7 way to where the new one goes, or do I have to rewire the new plug ?
Thanks,
Grant

I used crimp on wire taps at the rear of the bumper mounted seven way and ran the new cable to where I wanted it in the side of the bed. This way both plugs work if I want to tow a TT or 5er. JM2˘, Hank

If I had to do it over again that is the way I would go. Simple plug-n-play is the way to go. JM2˘, Hank

7 way

I have both 7 ways in the short bed and 2" hitch area. Mine is plug and play type. Like having the security of a back up system when towing the 5er. Took the dealer 20 minutes to install.

Took your advise and purchased one from etrailer ( I only live about a mile from etrailer so went and picker it up there). Easy install and works great. Thanks,
Grant

Howdy All;

Just had my 5th wheel hitch installed yesterday. They tapped into the wires for the Factory installed plug set-up that came with the truck... Didn't take all that long and works like a Champ. Now I have 2 seven blade plugs, pull anything (well, almost ).

Depending on the truck, and how handy you are, there may be other options as well.
My truck (2003 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab Dually) was built with the "camper wiring" option - basically, there's an extra set of wires for a 7-way plug bundled up at the front left corner of the bed (in between the bed and cab, right above the frame rail).
I was able to run that wire bundle back to the left rear corner of the bed along the frame, and installed a extra 7-way in that corner.

Works great for the 5er or the gooseneck, and still have the original one if I need to pull a conventional trailer.

Can't remember what the option code (RPO) is, but if you have a GM truck, might be worth looking for that wire bundle

Smile Awesome

Bless your heart @jimzdat!!! I couldn't believe it was such a hassle to track down an adapter cable for this, but the earlier posts finally helped me track one down. Fortunately your post made check the vin number (http://www.compnine.com/vid.php) for my 2007 Chevrolet 2500 and there is it was "PROVISIONS, CAMPER WIRING HARNESS CAMPER & 5TH WHEEL WIRING HARNESS(UY2)" There it was when I went out to check the truck.

Now I just need to figure out where the socket should go.

Thanks again

You're welcome

I mounted mine in the left rear corner of the bed, similar to this photo - there is a recessed section of the box that allows it to fit out of the way.

Looks good jimzdat! I may try that. You gotta remember: If you cut and splice into your wiring, it has to be sealed off or you WILL have corrosion problems in the future.

Trust me, everything is well sealed.

Didn't have to do any "cut'n'splice", as GM was nice enough to provide a length of wiring bundled up between the bed and cab, which will reach to the rear corner. Just had to install the 7-pin socket and seal it up on the back side.

Depending on the truck, you may have to pick a different location for the socket - I have a dually, so I have enough room inside the rear fenders to stash a couple small children

To me, it was well worth the trouble to avoid the trailer pigtail whacking against the tailgate, or pinched under the bottom edge of the gaet.
