Question 202QBWE - Door Window Shade

Hello folks:

Has anyone installed a shade on their trailer door? I'm looking at this one:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C1NFDG3B...lig_dp_it&th=1

But not sure if it will interfere with the screen or be "un-mountable" due to the uh, shall we say, "lite" nature of the door itself?

I looked at this one as well but the velcro strips all over the door seems "lame/tacky" to me.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B091KB8N76...v_ov_lig_dp_it

What have you done?

We spend nearly all our time RVing the I-10 corridor. Sunny and hot. My door windows are frosted, so there's no view. So all they do is let in light and heat. I don't need their light and I sure don't want their heat. So I installed the inexpensive Camco silvered window covers. The Velcro didn't offend me because it only shows when the covers are off, and they're never off.

For a while we toyed with the idea of the (way pricier) movable Lippert shades, but given that you have to open your door, walk onto the steps, AND close the screen portion behind you just to open or close them... that struck us as really unwieldy. Plus, when we asked ourselves when we might open them at all, we came up blank, so Camco it is.

I installed the Lippert shade in the door windows, and you are correct, have to separate the screen and primary door to access the shade, which must be done from the stairs. Another issue regarding these shades is that if they have been down for an extended period, it is a hassle getting them to accordion fold properly to open.

We had a frosted window in our jayco so we just did the Velcro version from Amazon.

https://a.co/d/d0cbRX1

It worked great and was only $17.

Art,

Your trailer should be equipped with a Lippert Exterior Door. After about 2020, all of them were "supposedly" shipped with the interior window molding designed to install the Lippert OEM shade. Check the black plastic interior window molding that holds the frosted window in the door. If it has two tracks, one on each side of the frame, then you can install the OEM window shade on your door.

I have a 202QB and installed a window film that allows you to see out but is hard to see in, works great for us.

During the Covid debacle, Lippert actually ran out of the shades, I ordered two, received one that appeared to be a return (taped and banged up box and the accordion pleats needed help getting folded correctly). The other finally arrived over a month later.

There's a school of thought that it is advantageous to install the Lippert shades upside down. I don't exactly remember why, maybe it was to give a normal-sized person a more convenient viewport out the window when the shade was only partway open. Anyway, keep in mind that it's an option and play with it before committing.

I installed the shade that goes in the window on my other 29rks. Then i realized you can’t get to from the inside. So just a thought

I installed our slim shades upside down to avoid the hassle of opening the door at night to close the shade between the screen door. This way you can leave the shade cracked open an inch or two from the top and still be able to peek out without anyone being able to see in. We've had no problems doing it this way.

There is a "vertical blind" style door window covering kit. It includes the entire assembly, new interior/exterior frame, new clear or tinted glass and the blind. There is a handle on the bottom of the blind so you can reach it through the door lock/opening slide in the screen and open/close the blind without opening the door or removing the top screen from the screen door.

I have no experience with it, but saw it in a Camping World store a couple years ago. So far, I've not felt the need to spend $150 so I could open or close the door window covering, but maybe someday ????? Who knows

@JRTJH

I took a look and I don't see anything that looks like a "track". It's inset about an inch or so but smooth.

Does that kit replace the trim piece? (Pic attached)

What you have is the standard older window trim. The newer "shade ready" trim has slots in the vertical edges. Your trailer requires the more expensive conversion kit, which contains a replacement trim surround with the slots... and a lot more work to install.

Thank you @Lhaven!

Looks like I'll be trolling the Lippert site for that conversion kit. I don't care about the work part, I can do it I'm sure!

Here's a link for the Slim Shade that I installed. It comes with the clear glass, interior and exterior trim bezels.

Like I mentioned in my previous post, I installed the shade so that it closes by lifting the shade up from the bottom of the window. This way you can leave it cracked open at the top to peek out.

Best prep is to line someone else up to hold the outside window parts onto the door while you hold the inside window parts and screw them in. Not a one-man job unless you can be in two places at once, or have a lot of duct tape to spare.

I just put this one on and it certainly works and it’s easy to install and use

I installed one of the lipert windows with the shade built in, in one of my 5th wheels. The installation was not overly difficult, althoug it did take 2 people. I also found using the shade to a bothersome process and it can get messed up within the window. I also found that I kept it closed most of the time. It is not a mod that I would do again. It's just not worth it with having to open the door, go out, close the screen door, adjust the shade, then go back inside.

This Thin Shade works great. Doesn’t interfere with screen and can be installed or removed without affecting original build. Nice built in look.
You do have to open screen door and outside door to open or close shade.

Lippert Components 806621 Thin Shade Complete Window Kit for RV Entry Doors
Amazon has them.
