As I said I'll keep both of mine!
Pictured with the Vista Shades from Shade Pro on both, it's like another room.

We love to sit out under our awning when there is a rain shower. We just tilt it so the rain does not puddle up and cause problems. Also we do not like the bright sunshine hitting the whole side of the camper, awning keeps it much cooler. Each person has their likes and dislikes. 😊

I use them and retract them when leaving or if in heavy winds. In 1990 I used Dads motorhome at an air show as a rest place for us cops working there. Had the awning out for shade. I was there when the A-10 pilot walked over and advised pulling it in as he was parked about 75 yds straight out from the side of the MH. I removed the plastic chairs/tables food etc. He started the engines and it was to late. The awning could not be retracted. I thought it was going to be destroyed but it did not even rip. The whole MH was rocking like in a windstorm. The awning on the current TT I have would have ripped and maybe broke.

You can very easily eliminate the awning, just take it off. As for me I'll keep mine. It's out whenever the wind will allow. I roll it in at night, if we are gone, or if a higher wind comes along. If my canvas lasts 13 years I would be overjoyed, but will likely change campers before that time comes. We do travel with a screen house as well, in case the bugs are bad the screen house goes over the picnic table, but it's no replacement for an awning.

Resurrecting an old thread for a follow up....I was reminded of it.

We have used the Clam enclosure now for 2 years with it staying erected for up to 4 1/2 months at a time - still looks new. My assessment;

It is the best "bug" screened enclosure we have ever had. The no see ums here can seemingly get through anything and can come in hordes. The Clam stops that...period.

The first time I put it up I just used the interior ground stakes. The first good wind we had one of the sides collapsed to the inside. I then attached ground stakes and tie downs to each of the pull tabs on all of the panels and we have not had a single issue again. Now, the only winds it has been subjected to are up to maybe 30mph with gusts. It has not been put up in an area like W TX where winds of 50 can be common and doubt it, or any other free standing enclosure, would stay put. You do have to keep and eye on the tie downs and keep them tensioned and make sure the stakes aren't pulling up.

As far as rain, it of course will come through the mesh if blowing in the right direction. Using the sun panels for the sides stops that but then makes it like a dark room. We like to use maybe 2 of them at the most wherever they do the most good.

All in all it has been one of the better buys we have made. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, we have had several other screened enclosures made in a variety of ways and none held a candle to the Clam. JMO

Sourdough, we've used it for a while now and my one recommendation is to restitch the groomer rings. 50 mph winds pulled them free. I've since, restitched with 80# Dacron fishing line. We put ours out for 3 mos and it got hit by another severe side wind storm that was reported to have 60+ mph shear winds. It held it's place!!!

If it ever fails I'll buy another as it's THAT GOOD AT keeping no-see-ums out!

I enjoyed reading this thread it brought back so many memories. When I was young and tent camping with my wife at Bennett Springs State Park, it was pouring down rain. We sat under a small canvas that was tied to a tree just over our heads and we had a small fire and made popcorn. People were packing up and leaving and sat and talked while the rain came down. I appreciate our big awning when I can sit out in the rain and stay dry, I like when it rains.

We like the awning on our 26' Hideout, but after almost 12 years it is getting worn and the fabric is separating. It looks like a big job for one person to replace this-is that a job that an RV place could/would do?
And since I am already typing, is there a list anywhere on here of used parts sources? I have tried using the search function with several different parameters with no luck. Keystone does not stock what I need any more, too old. (wheel skirts)
Thanks,
PR

ShadePro.com sells replacement fabric at reasonable prices. Two people on ladders can change the fabric very easily. If other parts are worn out they also sell complete awnings.

The link that Chip posted is one such source. There are several plastic manufacturers that market replacement wheel/fender skirts. Also, there is a very extensive listing of RV parts/accessories listed in the Repairs and Maintenance section of this forum. It's the first "sticky" (first thread) in the R&M section of the forum. Here's a quick link to it: http://www.keystoneforums.com/forums...ad.php?t=12986

Don't try to do this job with one person. However, two people with two ladders can do it (I did before selling my old rig last year).
