Bullet 248RKS - Roof Walkable?

I was on the roof of my Bullet today and it seemed very "springy". Is it safe to walk on this roof? It feels like I might break through!

Roofs are walkable with caution. If you're in the 200+ range, it's recommended to throw some plywood down and/or crawl to distribute your weight.

I called dealership before getting on my passport roof. They said ok. But it doesn't feel too stable to me either. I usually am on all fours when up there. I only go up to assess the seals and I put on maxxair vents. I weigh less than 200lbs.

Thanks, I will keep on all fours when up there. I'm 200++.
I don't go up there much. Like you just to check on seals and install and remove A/C cover for storage.

What's that 7700# spec on your truck? Max Tow should get you in the 10,000 lb range, and the payload package should get you in the 2,000 lb range.

Moderator's Note: The OP was asking a question about whether or not it is safe to walk on the roof of his Bullet.

It's the 7700# Max GVWR option, giving me a max payload of 2000# at my wheelbase (145"). I'll edit my signature to clear that up.
Thanks

We just got our Passport 2100RBWE end of Aug this year. During the walk through the sales manager told me about checking the roof and said there was no weight limit. I'm 300+, and have not been on the roof yet, but plan to be very careful when I do.

At that weight if you plan on walking on the roof, I'd highly recommend that you place a suitably sized piece of plywood underneath your feet. There should be something (carpeting or ??) between the plywood and the rubber roof to protect the rubber from abrasion and/or tears.

If the salesman told you there is no weight limit for the roof, he really doesn't know what he is talking about. If at all possible, I'd try to get someone else to inspect the roof and carry out any maintenance such as caulking/sealing.

You should also think about climbing onto the roof using the ladder mounted on the rear of the RV. If you must go onto the roof, get an extension ladder and lay it up against the side of the RV. Place pads between the ladder and the RV so that it doesn't mar the edge of the roof/RV.

I'm 240 and I wouldn't walk around on the roof of my trailer.
This is just what I did to install 2 vent covers.
Stand on a ladder on side with pad at top of ladder.
plywood with carpet under it.
While standing on the ladder I laid on the roof to keep my weight spread out, I had to get up on the roof to do one side of one vent so I got on my knee's for a while.
I was lucky, 1 vent is next to the side and the other is next to rear of the trailer.

I am 240# and I walk on my roof all the time with no issues. I do make a point to walk carefully and try to keep my weight
spread out and walk on the ceiling joist locations when possible.

khoyt I am a little larger than you. I do not repeat do not walk on the roof! first off the factory ladder I feel won't support my weight.find some on lighter to go up. my dw goes up and i go up a safe ladder and direct her were to check things out. and since i tell her what to look for, if there is a problem it will still be my fault!

Here's the reply I got from Keystone when I inquired about the roof on our 2012 Bullet 281BHS:

Thank you for contacting Keystone RV. Your Bullet does not have a walkable roof. When you need to clean off the roof, we recommend you look for the trusses to step on.

Regards,

Michelle Diaz

Stay off the roof or use the plywood! It felt spongy for a reason.

How in the heck do I find the roof trusses? The rubber roof isn't fastened to the trusses with anything. All I know is this fat boy isn't getting up there!

If your roof is not a walkable roof, there will be a little bit of flex of the roof between the joists (they're not really trusses). They are likely 16" on center or 24" on center. That may vary based on the location of roof vents and the air conditioner, but it will generally hold true.

You pretty much expect that there will be a joist at each roof vent and several at the air conditioner.

Also, your ceiling material inside will be stapled to the joists and the staples then covered with a bit of white filler. If you look carefully, you can spot them.

IF you were to get up on the roof, you can "find" the trusses by applying downward pressure with your foot onto the rubber roof. The roof will flex somewhat between the trusses and will flex very little, if any, where the cross-members are located.

Sometimes, if you look at the roof at just the right angle, you can detect faint "lines" where the various roof sections are divided. You may also be able to "feel" them by sweeping the palm of your hand across the roof.

The rubber membrane, of course, is laid on top of the roof sheathing so you will not see or feel any screws. If you do, then you have trouble!

It's great to be a member of this forum! Thank you, yet again, for the great advice SteveC7010 and Festus2. I really wanted to get up there, when we purchased it, but decided to inspect the roof with a 10 foot step ladder instead. Come spring, when I get it out of storage, I will follow your advice and get on the roof. I like to see things up close.

Thanks again.
