RV Parks near Winnipeg?

So fellow seasoned travelers.

Planning our first trip to out northern neighbors of Canada during the World Cup soccer matches this summer.

So first of all looking for any tips or hints for Americans crossing the border with their 5er for the first time...?

And, does anyone have any RV Camp Ground recommendations in the Winnipeg area?

Thanks for any and all of your comments

A few tips -
1) If you have pets, make sure you have all of the required vaccinations and paper work done.
2) If you normally carry or pack firearms with you, leave them at home. Only under special circumstances are you permitted to bring guns into Canada and then you will need a special permit. Firearms are not permitted entry for "personal protection" from either 2 or 4 legged critters. BTW, we don't have grizzly bears roaming the streets.
3) Be prepared to pay higher prices for fuel, beer, wine and liquor. Even with a favourable exchange rate, our higher prices for these items will surprise you.
4) Provincial Parks --- not all have full services (W/E/S) so check what is available for you if you always need electrical.
5) Everyone will need a current Passport.
6) For campgrounds near Winnipeg, check out www.campgroundreviews.com Click on the Canadian flag for sites in this country.
7) Learn the basics about the metric system. Fuel is sold in liters. Weights are in grams and kilograms. Distances in kilometers. Speed in kilometers per hour.
8) We don't use pennies here so prices are rounded up or down to the nearest 5 cents.

Should be enough for now, eh?

Glad you are getting up to my stomping grounds.

There are a few things to keep in mind about the campgrounds in the Winnipeg area:
* campgrounds to the east and north are generally better maintained than those to the south and west since those are prone to spring flooding. That should not be an issue this year.
* traffic is generally lighter than what you would experience in the US, so a campground a few miles out is not a problem to commute from to take in a soccer game. Bird's Hill Provincial Park north of the city as well as a private campground east of the city (Traveller's?) next to Fun Mountain are good candidates.

While in Winnipeg, consider a few side trips. One is north to Grand Beach Provincial Park and the various campgrounds to the east in the Whiteshell Provincial Park. We spend a lot of our time camping at Falcon Lake and Westhawk Lake in the Whiteshell. If you have the time, also check out Riding Mountain about 4 hours northwest of the city.

If you plan on camping in a provincial park, reservations do not start until April 6th and Riding Mountain does not take reservations until April 9th.

I hope you have a great time in our city.

riding mountain national park

A trip to riding mountain national park is well worth the time. if you want to stay in the campground near the townsite then book online April 9 at 8am local time. The sites are wooded with full hookups and you can have campfires. Wassagaming, the townsite has all the tourist stuff, the park has lots of beautiful hiking and lakes for fishing.

So, is riding mountain national park a campground?

Yes, it is. There are a range of sites -- basic, partial hookup and full hookup. Opens in mid May and reservations are recommended. Google Riding Mountain National Park for more info.

Other late tips ...
1) Check with customs before entering Canada to see what you can bring across in the way of food and/or agricultural products. I have found there are more restrictions/rules going the other way - from Canada into the US. The restrictions often make no sense but just smile and say "Yes Sir" or "No sir" and you'll be fine.

2) We have no dollar bills but do have "loonies" and "toonies" -- translation $1 coin and $2 coin. Your pockets can become very heavy and you will develop a lean to one side or the other - depending upon where you keep your change.

3) I have heard but not witnessed that there are helicopter sized flies near Winnipeg but that is probably just a rumor. Take repellent or a baseball bat just in case.

Thanks Festus2, for tips here and on the $1 and $2 coins! I just looked at the site and I am anxious to make my call on April 8th!

Now, I just need to pull the trigger on a new set of tires before I make this journey from MT!

I hope you enjoy both the journey and the destination. Living close to the border you are not a complete stranger to us. Have a great time in "Winterpeg" (That's what the rest of us call it. My apologies to all Winterpegers.......)

Next trip -- come out west to Beautiful British Columbia. The grass IS greener here---- I'm mowing it already!!!

We have stayed at the Winnipeg KOA, not fancy or rustic but close to town.
Be sure and go to Portage and Main if you are a Guess Who fan. The forks and the warehouse districts are really historic and cool places to hang out while in the 'Peg.

Ayotte, thanks for the link. That looks like a nice place for a visit also.

Micar, funny you mention the KOA. Just yesterday I made a reservation there just in case the others all filled up before I had a chance to make a reservation.

Well. As luck would have it we made a reservation at the KOA to hold a spot until I could make a reservation at another location that was recommended here. And it's a good thing because I forgot to go back and make a follow up reservation. Long story short we leave this Thursday and will be staying at the Winnipeg KOA!

The current exchange rate is $1.24CDN to $1.00US, so that will ease the pain somewhat on expenses. However, your credit card account will be charged an international transaction fee for every transaction. It might be wise to query your bank for their fee (including ATM fees) before you use a card and use the one with the lesser fee. It might also be wise to buy some Canadian cash before crossing the border.

Bring a bottle of hooch for your own consumption. Hard alcohol is expensive and the amounts are rationed rather severely compard to America when ordering a drink. I just order a good Canadian beer when dining out.

Say hey to "Timmy's" for me.
