This One Didn't Get Away

Believe it or not. A true fishing story..........

On our recent camping trip to a "Trophy Trout" lake, my wife and I were in kayaks, each trolling a fly. We weren't doing all that well so decided to change flies and try a different pattern. I paddled over to her kayak and tied up along side while I replaced flies.

My head was down concentrating on tying the knot when she suddenly yelled, "Fish in the kayak!". I quickly looked over and saw this rainbow trout thrashing around between her legs. We both tried to grab a hold of the slippery, slimy devil and, at the same time, keep the kayaks steady in the water. If you've ever been in a kayak, you don't want to make large, sudden movements or you'll end up capsizing and going for a swim.

After a bit, we managed to get a towel, grab it and settle things down. I would guess that the Rainbow was about 14" - nice and bright. Of course, we released it and it swam away - happy that it didn't end up in the frying pan.

My wife told me afterwards that she felt a slight smack on the side of her head and the next thing she saw was this crazy fish inside her kayak!

BTW this was the only fish we caught in 3 days. Who needs a rod and reel? Just go for a paddle and wait. This really happened..... honestly.

Not. Why? No picture. And if you're fishing, why didn't you keep it? The whole thing smells…I dunno…like something.

Scott -

Yes. Kayaks, cameras and fishing don't mix too well. Too many bones - I catch and release. Fishy? Yes, I do smell something.

Fetus,
I believe you.Had a similar thing happen in college. On a federal game management area they partially drained a lake. It left a trough of water about 90-100 yards wide along the levee accessible by boat. My buddy said everyone had been tearing up the bass there. They were pinned up, so to speak. We take his Jon boat and fish till almost dark and not so much as a bite between us. We fished all the way to the farthest point from the boat ramp, it was getting dark and we decided to head back. He cranked up his 12.5 hp outboard and we started motoring back. A 4lb bass hit me in the shoulder and the fight was on. I wrangled him down after he finned me a time or two and that was that. Rich said, " we can't throw him back if he is that dumb, he will die anyway." So he kept him and had him for dinner.
No one believed me either, but always a funny story for us to talk about to each other. Everyone else says we are lying!!

Thinking about lakes with big fish that jump.

Didn't happen to be a windy lake full of algae, did it?

If it is, I hate that lake. Only lake around I know of where the trout will jump in your boat but are a bugger to catch.

No algae bloom, no wind. Leighton Lake near Merritt. Lots of Rainbows being caught - trolling and fly.

Ahh. Was thinking of Tunkwa. Don't think I could guess any closer than that and be wrong.

I really do hate those lakes. First, they are normally very windy (Tunkwa means something like big wind). Second the fish are very picky. Third, in Tunkwa the fish jump like mad. Frustrating to see them jumping and not biting. Been a few years since I was last there as I go to other lakes I like better.

Windy yes but not so much as to make it unfishable. Chironomids were doing well but I wouldn't say the fish are "picky". After all, one jumped into my wife's kayak! Did that come out right????
