Plague squirrel closes Calif. campgrounds

This from USA Today:

11:30 a.m. EDT July 26, 2013
Following the discovery of a plague-infected squirrel in Southern California's San Gabriel Mountains, three campgrounds have closed to visitors so officials can control the spread of the disease.

WRIGHTWOOD, Calif. (AP) — The discovery of a plague-infected squirrel has prompted the closure of three campgrounds in the Angeles National Forest.

The Los Angeles Daily News (http://bit.ly/15MqMNG ) says Broken Blade, Twisted Arrow and Pima Loops of the Table Mountain campgrounds were closed Wednesday. The camps are near Wrightwood and about 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

A ground squirrel trapped there on July 16 tested positive this week for bubonic plague. The disease is spread through flea bites and can be fatal if untreated.

The campgrounds will be closed for at least seven days as officials find squirrel burrows and dust them to control fleas.

This is an over exaggeration of the real problem - The real problem is the campers do not thoroughly cook the squirrels to the correct internal temperature...

Fried squirrel brains and scrambled eggs with fresh home made biscuits..... Now that's a breakfast of champions.... At least at the cabin where everyone smokes a corn cob pipe <wink>
