Shipping an RV

Hi all,

We are going to be moving to st pete from columus, Ohio this July 2016. We have a 37' fifth wheel and only an F150. Has anyone ever had their rigs shipped before? If so, who do you recommend?

Thanks

Most trailers are just driven by transport drivers.

You may want to check with your local dealer and see who they use to do dealer exchanges or transports to different shows. They may have someone to put you in contact with.

It is not cheap usually because they have to cross scales, ect since they are a transport business.

As stated above it is not going to be cheap but a professional insured driver with the equipment and experience to do the job correctly and safely is a must.

I can put you in contact with a few drivers that I know out there. Most transport drivers are independent contractors that run under the DOT authority of a company that they lease to. Many can find their own side loads, but have to pay a fee, typically 20%, to the lease company. The fee puts the load under that companies DOT, insurance etc. They will generate a legal bill of lading as well. You do not want to have you unit transported by anyone that is not properly insured. With current rates, you are probably looking around $1.60 per mile, that would give the driver about $1.28 after they give the 20% to the company.

If you are okay with those numbers, PM me and I'll get you in contact with a good driver that I trust will take care of your RV.

Maybe one of you guys that knows more about this can comment:
If this is anything like transporting freight, be very careful about who you pick for a transport company. In the freight case, I know of at least one transporter that essentially limits their liability to "scrap value" (by the lb) of anything they transport.

And / Or make sure your insurance covers it..

Was just at the dealer this weekend and saw two new RVs transported in - both on spares.. :-)

Most RV transport companies (all that I'm aware of) are insured for the value of the RV up to $250k. They are insured for transporting the new RVs as well as anything else that the drivers contract as backhauls. The main thing you have to ask is how much are they insured for, at what is used to determine the value of your property, most likely NADA.

uship is an option to see what you can find, just make sure you look very closely at the credentials of who you select. There are a lot of people on that site that are not running legally. When I was transporting, I placed bids on several trailers and boats, but never got a single one. People were bidding them down so low that I would have lost money taking it. That tells me one thing, they are not running legally. Insurance for a transporter or transport company is expensive. I finally gave up on uship, most transporters I talked to have the same opinion.
