High cost of fuel

How high will the price of fuel go before you stop camping. I’m going to Yellowstone in June from North Carolina and I was planning on paying no more than $4.00 a gallon. The way diesel is going up the price may be $5.00 a gallon. I saw on yahoo that the price may be $6.50 or $7.00 a gallon by June. At that price I may have to pretend camping.

The cost of fuel will not affect us in our plans but we have been blessed. The problems we feel with our current fuel costs are self imposed and hopefully there will be some relief in the near future if we can figure out which ends up. I hope things will not get as bad as they seem but if so I wish everyone the very best and hopefully....happy camping.

We went to Yellowstone, Craters of the Moon, Twin Falls, ID, Dinosaur National Park, then through the plains during the summer of 2015. Diesel around Hill City, SD was over $4/gallon and it was almost $5/gallon in Yellowstone at Fishing Bridge service station inside the park. It didn't slow us down then, it won't slow us down now...

I may grumble a bit more as I top off the tank, but I'll still be "topping off the tank".....

DW knows my commentary as we pull into a gas station - not always good but always colorful. She will say - "did you see that sign with prices? You good with that?" She's my special darlin and knows I'll fill up regardless....unlike my dad; he would drive 5 miles in a circle to find the cheapest gas - .19 or .21 a gallon.

I'm currently paying $5 for diesel in southern California. Sometimes you just have to go with it.

Currently 1.65 liter here, convert $s and liters, I'm at $5/gal now. Headed to AZ end of the week. If I find it under $5, I might just leave er idle while I fuel up.

No Sir I don’t like it at all. I camped at west Yellowstone Rainbow point 2020 August good time to travel having the country’s locked down most of America was open and fuel up there was under $ 2.50 gallon. I can hull 96 gallons of fuel and I remember fueling up under 2 bucks a gallon.

$5.00 a gallon will not slow me down but if over $6.00 I may have to think about it. I have a 100gal auxiliary tank in the truck so I don’t plan on buying any diesel around the park. I have been to Yellowstone a few times and I never get tired of Yellowstone. I just hope there is no shortage of diesel
Happy camping

DW & I are retired. Neither of are trucks are new, effecient fuel users but we don’t drive much so not a real issue beside me complainig more. We have some 1K mile trips booked so a buck or 2 a gallon more is not a deal breaker. I really feel sorry for the younger generation that have to commute to work, they have no choice and with the seemingly never ending inflation are in a constant economic decline.

A lot of threads on here about the difficulties making and getting campground reservations and issues with other campers when they do get a site.
All that may not matter if high fuel prices make it impossible to even get there.
As for sympathy for the younger generation, they go to the same ballot box as the rest of us. If they are so interested in entertaining socialism then maybe they should get some tips from those who own campers and travel around to see the beautiful country of Venezuela. Just sayin.......

Mary and I used to be Lake Michigan boaters before we switched to “land boating” a couple years ago. Most recent vessel had twin 380 Cummins with a total capacity for 275 gallons of diesel. We got 0.8 miles per gallon. This gave us about a 300 mile range between fill-ups.

My practice at the fuel dock was to NEVER look at the credit card slip when I completed the sale. I didn’t want to know. Because, if I did look, I felt I would begin to obsess on cost and forget why we were doing what we were doing - exploring and enjoying each other’s company.

Now, I have a 31 gallon tank, and get 10 miles per gallon. Still have about a 300 mile range, and I still NEVER look at the credit card receipt.

I think you're spot on with your comment. Seems like the younger generation is the ones changing our way of living both good and bad. And like you say people regardless of age Need to get out and vote.

OK, I've had a few moments to think about the OP's original question? And ... my answer is ... I'll probably never give up camping.

And here's why? If you all remember, right after September 11, 2001 things went kind of crazy for a while. If you remember, the housing market and mortgage companies faced some absolutely horrible fall out from the government because of defaulted loans and such. Fuel prices skyrocketed and terrorism was the highest priority driving everything. True or false, fact or fiction, government conspiracy cover-ups or 100% real, the fact is, all of this drove fuel prices through the roof and Mr. Average Citizen was making decisions between paying for fuel so they could get back and forth to work, paying for food, or paying their mortgage. It was scary times, uncertain times, very weird times in the history of the world.

I remember from different forum sites the same question was asked, "How high do fuel prices have to get before you stop camping?"

Well, time, and now it's all history, has proven that folks WILL continue "camping" and RV-ing and living life, and doing things, and searching for ways to improve their world, and do things that bring the greatest amount of pleasure to their private worlds, and will continue to do so at any cost!

So, in order to answer the original question, "How high?" The answer is ... "There is no limit." Because the human spirit within us will continue to find ways to engage in what gives each of us the greatest "pleasure" in life, and that somehow always seems to be the highest priority at ANY cost.

Agree that for most there will be no limit, just becomes the norm. Would be nice if we could be energy independent again though…but I digress.

I have an all summer long trip from Florida to Maine, over to Michigan through Canada and then back to Florida. The amount we originally budgeted for Diesel has gone up significantly. Will have to squeeze more of out the kids allowance to make up for it.

We also have trips planned through the end of July this year. We won't quit 'camping', but for the most part, we'll probably end up staying within within a 4 or 5 hour drive from home then. (200-250 miles max difference).

Just an fyi, even if fuel prices increase, the camping does not have to stop. Just pick destinations closer to home. You'll be amazed with you may find in your own back yard that you had no clue even existed. When fuel prices went crazy between 2000 and 2010, we did exactly that. We decided other folks come from all over the world to explore Indiana State Parks. Maybe we need to look at Indiana State Parks a little different too. So, over the next 10 years or so, we made it our goal to camp in every Indiana State Park and every Indiana State Recreation area and re-discover them all over again. So we did! And we did! It it was awesome! We didn't have to travel far, it didn't cost a fortune on fuel, and we still had the thrill of taking the camper "out" and getting away from our daily work routine.

And by the way, If you live in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota, Missouri, Illinois, Texas .... you guys have some absolutely awesome state parks too. Why not re-discover them through new eyes and save on travel expenses and fuel prices?

You're right about awesome state parks here in Texas. We have a trip planned to see the two Grand kids coming up in spring. With the gas prices what they are now we have decided to skip the truck and RV and go in the car instead to visit the kids in Alabama and Washington D.C.

The trip was planned at 5,000 miles probably a little more. At ten miles to the gallon 500 gallons, at $4 bucks a gallon $2,000 bucks. So each $1.00 a gallon increase equals 500 bucks. I remember a place in Canada the diesel was $1.99 a liter and I didn’t even look at how much it was

Have you reserved or priced hotel stays? We've found its near impossible to find a room under a $100 a night, at least one we'd stay in, with most nearer $150+. Typically they offer less services, most no breakfast or making up your room unless staying more than 3 days.
Not mention eating out! If you can eat anywhere for under $10 a head you've found a bargain.
So with the fuel prices it's about a wash whether hauling your rv staying in rv parks or in your car staying in decent hotels, either will cost about $200+ per day!

Yea I know where you're coming from but with pulling the RV we would definitely had to pull over somewhere to stay and our Alpine is not set up for a overnight stay at a rest area or Wal-Mart or whatever. Almost have to pull into a campground along the way. With the cost of the fuel, campgrounds and slower moving we decided we could make it to the Granddaughter's where a motel is 79.00 a night and includes breakfast. When leaving there it's a straight shot to D.C. where my Grandsons apartment is. All in all 4 night stays at motel plus gas at about 35 miles a gallon versus the trucks 9 to 10 miles if I'm lucky mileage. Plus at our age pulling the trailer just don't thrill me as much as it used too. Now if it was a short pull to a local state park that would be a different scenario.
