Progressive Surge Protector

I installed a hard wired Progressive Surge Protector into our Cougar last year and it has worked like it is meant to and I’m getting ready to head south to Arizona for a few days and bought a Honda 2000i to help when we aren’t in a FHU park but when I plug the RV into the generator I get a E2 code or open ground and the protector cuts out. I think I’ve read something about this but can’t remember how to remedy this. Any Ideas before I call progressive to find a solution.

Thanks.

I looked into this when I got my Progressive hard wire unit. If I remember correctly when using the gen the E-2 error comes on and it means an open ground or open neutral. Some fix this by plugging in a replacement plug, one used to fix a bad plug that you have to wire to the broken cord, into one of the 110v plugs on your gen. You have to wire up the plug by running a wire to the neutral and to the ground. This supposedly closes the loop. I wired the plug exactly as the instructions said that I found on the internet. I made the plug but still got the error

In the end I just turn it off. The panel has an on/off switch. From what I have read Gen power is clean and steady and it doesn't require the unit to be on. Since the gen is only powering your rv you don't have to worry about the power being used by hundreds of other campers which lowers the voltage.

So now If I'm running the gen the unit is off. Never had a problem.

Hope this helps.

I found the same work around diagram but didn't bother with it. Glad I didn't. I also just flip the switch to bypass when using a generator.

Thanks for the response. I ended up calling progressive and he said either buy a special plug from them or just make a short extension cord and jump a wire from the neutral to the ground in the plug. Or run a ground from the generator to the trailer frame. I like your suggestion better.

Build a ground to neutral bond plug. Google it. Super easy to make

My Champion 3100 inverter generator has both a 30 Amp RV outlet and a standard 110 volt outlet.

I bought one of these plugs, from Homedespot, wired the ground and neutral pins together and plugged it into the 110V outlet. The Progressive module was happy and the camper is still protected.

I don't think I paid more than a couple of bucks for the plug.

How do you like your Champion 3100? I'm trying to decide between that or twin 2000w units with a parallel cable.

I am very happy with it.

It will start and run the 15K AC unit, is pretty quiet and has started on the first pull 99% of the times I have used it. I can load it in the bed of the truck by myself.

If you are a Costco member, they have it on sale periodically for $699 + tax and free shipping.

Dual 2K units will give a little more power, but there is a pretty significant price point for that and I am not convinced that little bit of extra power gives you much.

I also have a Champion 3100 invertor genset and a plug in PI power module. I made a bonding plug as described. It works perfectly.

As a recommendation, make sure you cover the end of the plug where a cord would normally exit with electricians tape to ensure no water enters the plug.
