Question Kudos to Dometic Corporation

My 11 month old Dometic 3000W generator for some unknow reason refused to start. With still a month left on the warranty I took it to a repair center in my area as directed by customer service. Apparently the carberator was fouled & needed to be replaced. I was informed that Dometic no longer uses or repairs that particular make of carb & was told they were sending me a brand new generator to replace mine. I was very pleased with that, however the original warranty from the old one was transfer to my new one, leaving me with just 2 weeks of warranty left. So I guess my current pleasure with Dometic will fade quickly if this one gives me a problem. Why would you not put a full warranty on a new product???

I have found that a lot of companies do that when replacing items during warranty period. Everything from appliance parts to car parts. Most recently i can think of an alternator that was that way. I guess we have to look at it that we are better off with a new replacement than having it happen after the warranty was up and being out of luck. Hopefully that new generator will give you great service.

I hope it will also. I'm very happy with the product as it worked great (until the problem) & it's alot of bang for the buck. Not as quiet as the honda 3000i but alot less than half the price. I seen them online yesterday for $749, that's even less than I paid. It's the model LW3000 Plus for anyone wanting to check it out.

Somethings make no sence. But if your warranty is for a year and it goes bad in 11 months they have the option of repair or replace. But as the manufacturer says you did not pay for the replacement so you do not get a extended warranty the replacement unit. How ever some (very rare) you may be able to purchace a warranty you have nothing to lose. Just ask.

Dometic is not alone in this warranty - replacement issue. Sears, for example, does exactly the same thing with their appliances leaving the customer hoping that in the next couple of months or so the brand new replacement will not pack it in. A Sears rep tried to explain the "logic" behind this practice but it was too illogical for my little brain to absorb. Best of luck with your new generator.

When Festus2 mentioned "a little brain" I took it as my cue to chime in.
I would rather have a new genny then a re-manufactured carb of questionable design on my old unit regardless of warranty.

I had to go back and read Festus2 post THREE times before I saw the "little brain" reference. Apparently I have an even smaller one!!!

Thanx guys for the imput, however, I still don't see the logic, if it's a brand new product it should have a brand new warranty. I'm happy to accept the new genny & grateful to get it but if it's supposed to be so damn good what is the fear in giving it with an updated warranty. Maybe it's just me! I just got an e-mail reply from customer service at Dometic regarding my inquiry & they said warranty coverage begins at the time of purchase even if a new replacement product is supplied under warranty. So I guess I'm out of warranty on a brand new product. If I have any issues with the new one, I'll post them, hopefully I won't!

Think of it this way: You just cost them a new unit (yeah, they did it to themselves). Why give you a full year to cost them another unit? Your purchase entitled you to one year of warranty. They upheld their end of the bargain.

Stop Looking

jq1031.....
Stop banging your head against a brick wall looking for any logic with these kinds of replacement warranties. There is none. Some might say that the company is doing you a big favour by replacing their defective unit and giving you a replacement that has only the original's remaining warranty time left on it. You would think that a brand new unit would come with a brand new warranty. What kind of illogical thinking is that?
Enjoy your new generator and don't try to figure all this out. It's just not worth the aggravation.

Your right Festus, it's just the principal. All these companys advertise, tell us about their great products & how strong they back them & then back off after the sale. Yes, I was treated well by Dometic, but don't comprehend the lack of warranty on a new product. ANYWAY, I still love the generator.

Harbor Freight does the same. I bought a 800 watt generator to recharge my boat batteries when camping, it was $79, the 24 month replacement warranty was $9.99, so why not... Anyway, about 4 months later, the generator died, I took it back to HF, expecting a new generator. I got it, no questions asked. Then the manager asked me if I wanted a replacement warranty on this one. I reminded him I still had 20 months on the current replacement plan... NOPE !!!! According to the small print, the replacement is a ONE time replacement during the 24 month time frame. So, I opted for the 12 month replacement warranty for $5.49 rather than pay for the "high priced one" at $9.99.

I'd bet you that if you find your "magnifiers" and read the "REALLY REALLY small print, you'll find somewhere in there, that it's a 12 month warranty from the date of original purchase.... Remember, the BIG print "giveth" and the small print "taketh" away.......
