Bumper Shelf fix

We are planning on going full time for awhile. I wanted to be able to use the bumper shelf to carry bikes and probably a generator. The factory shelf supports were less than adequate. They were already bending with not ever being used. I went to Buckley Welding (Washington State) and they did a FANTASTIC job! http://buckleyweldingservices.com/ Photo 1 shows before, photos 2 to 4 show after. Less than $170 for time and materials.

I moved the spare under the trailer on a BAL carrier.

With the mesh I can secure the bikes and generator.

When I sat my 220# person on the bumper edge it did not even sag or move a bit!

I am impressed.

It looks much stronger !!!

In the first picture, that "support bracket" looks like it's an accident waiting to happen.

Thanks for sharing your solution to the "age old" problem of OEM racks.

Looks good. I know when I had one on a trailer it was only good for 200 pounds. If this is on a TT just remember the more weight you put back there the better chance you have to increase sway.

Thumbs up

After one of the L brackets fell off of my Cougar, I used uni-strut and beam clamps to do something very similar to what your welder did. I assure you mine does not look as pretty as yours, but it has made the rack usable for over 10,000 mi. of some really terrible roads. I am sure you will be very pleased with your mod. I found ratchet straps to be the best way to keep bikes and stuff from bouncing .... better than bungees. (I throw a couple of them on too. Just to play it safe. )

Such a simple upgrade that should have came from the factory. I too was a sucker and thought the rack could carry 2 bikes. Soon mine will be upgraded too.
