Yes, here in MN, the tank exchange places are definitely on the high side for cost. I also believe they are not a full 20 lb fill, which only makes them more expensive...

Though I'll admit I have used Blue Rhino a couple of times for some older tanks that I wanted to be a little newer and shiny. And for another that had a leaky o-ring.

So I'll agree with Steve for routine filling, don't use the tank exchanges. But there can be a reason to use 'em once in a while.

We will wait to see what happens this year, but last year our local Camping World had propane for $1.99/gallon on Tuesdays.

I always try to run with two full tanks before I leave. If for some reason I cant, I turn the full one off and run on the partial one. I check during the day while on the road if it empties while on the road i turn on the second tank,. I try not to use much and leave it on for the fridge when on the road. We stop every night at a KOA or similar and there is always a place nearby that you can explore and get a bottle of propane. Best rule of thumb is leave home with 2 full ones regardless of the extra few bucks and one less worry.

Most camper stores and bigger campgrounds will do refills also.

Don't do the exchange thing with your tanks they are smaller and way to expensive.
