Battery Cover/Storage

The plastic battery cover supplied with our Passport 195RB has two ports on top to vent any battery gasses. Problem is, when it rains and the ports are open water enters and begins to fill the battery compartment. Is there any reason these top ports can't be sealed and holes drilled into the bottom of the battery cover to vent any battery gasses?

I've removed the battery from the trailer, store it in our basement and each month charge it for 24-hours at 2-amps in the hopes of keeping it fresh. Any ideas on how to further maintain the battery?

Merry Christmas to all.....

(1) You could leave the top vent holes open and drill holes in the bottom so water can drain.

(2) Additional maintenance: Check electrolyte level monthly and top off when needed. Also, keep posts corrosion-free.

We drilled 1/8 holes in ours and they clogged easily. .250 holes are better.
