Second AC needed?

Hello all,

We're heading down to Henderson State Park, FL. in mid June for two weeks. We have a 2021 Keystone Hideout 28BHS with a 15K BTU AC unit. My question is do we need to get another AC for this trip? It's prewired for the second unit in the main bedroom. Our camper is ducted from the ceiling, so our room does get air. Is it worth the money to acquire another unit?

Appreciate any feedback?

JMHO but I think it’s worth it. Helps resale value and it’s better to have and not need than need and not have.

Destin, mid June? I would want 2 ACs without a doubt - and yes, it is WELL worth the money.

If temps get into the upper 90s your 15k btu unit will struggle to keep cabin temps in the low 80s and if you are in direct sunlight, your camper will see mid 80s temps. Get a second AC.

Go ahead and bite the bullet but get another 15K unit it'll be much better than the standard 13.5K they'll want to sell you..

When I buy a new trailer I always make them swap out the 13.5 for a 15K before I take delivery.. Been there done that with the 13.5's.. waste of time and money.

Might price a unit with a heat pump as well. I'd rather use campground electricity than my propane anytime.
To be clear, I doubt you will need the heat pump in Florida this June.

Also if you get the heat pump option you'll need to realize that any outside temps below about 40 degrees the heat pump will blow cold air at that time the furnace will be required.

I'm no expert, but I have a two AC units on my TT.

When talking to the reps about that, they said that unless my TT is equipped to use 50 Amp, I couldn't use a second AC as most TTs are wired for 30 Amp instead. Thus, I have 50 Amp for my TT.

The experts in this forum can probably weigh in on that more... but if you're adding a second AC, you may want to check that you can pull in 50 Amp. And experts, correct me if I'm wrong too. I don't want to be giving out bad info!

That is correct, you could only use one A/C at any one time. but you could have two A/C units..

As a note... the OP's unit has 50 amp and second A/C listed as optional so unless they chime in and verify the amperage of the trailer, we don't know.

"Is it worth the money to acquire another unit?"

Really, that depends only on you.

If your camper does a good job for you where you would normally camp, then the expense of adding a second unit is really a waste. However, if it is not enough for your current style of camping, then yes, a second AC will benefit you tremendously.

If your Florida trip is a one-time-only trip, and your single AC unit does well every where else, you may just want to tough out some extra heat. This time of year, it will be HOT and the sun will bear down on your camper. So, really the answer is yours? Do you want to tough out the heat for a while, (if your works well), because one AC will probably NOT keep up with the Florida heat. If you are willing to tough it out, then the answer is "no". Don't do it.

However, if even for a short while, the discomfort of extra heat is not an option, then YES, get the second AC.

My first hard sided camper was 18 feet long (inside the box). And one AC did wonderful. Our second one was 31 feet long with a 13,500 btu unit (only 1) and it did pretty good. Our third was 34 feet long and we swapped out the 13,500 btu for a 15,000 btu (only 1) and it then worked very well.

Our current fifth wheel has 2 units, a 15,000 AC/Heat Pump, and the 13,500 also. We've been in some heat, and both AC's worked pretty hard. And we were glad we had both of them.

What is nice though, is the choice to turn on the second AC farthest from the living room and not hear the noise, or be in the bed room and turn the one on in the living living and not hear the noise so much when sleeping. Of course, this works well in cooler climates. It would never work in Florida.

We really enjoy having 2 AC's. It does give us a lot of versatility. BUT, it does require 50 amp RV electric service. If your camper is already a 50 amp camper, then I do know, you'll never regret getting the second AC.

From Texas currently in Arizona & have traveled all across the country, my opinion if you have/buy any rv over 25'+/- in length 2 acs would be mandatory, maybe not in Alaska. Even the northern states at 80-85 degrees + 90-100% humidity 1 single ac will struggle to keep you comfortable.
I also would recommend 2 - 15k units, bigger is always better!

The OP said his camper was, "it's prewired for the second unit in the main bedroom" and thus his camper will be 50A and install should be relatively straightforward.

We all know that saying that it's wired and it actually being 50 amp can be two different things. 🙄

Interesting.. I am just preparing to pull the trigger on my second AC as well. We have a 37' Outback with a single 15K. Does fine camping here in PA but a few trips south have us sold on second AC. Most put a 13.5 in the bedroom and I would have figured that would be fine. We are pre-wired but not ducted for the second AC. You still say go 15k?

Absolutely, cost differential is minimal but rewards are priceless.

My 2 cents. We have a 35' 5th wheel with a single 15k unit mounted waaay back from the front BR. On the really hot, muggy days (98f+ and 80-90% humidity) I block all the A/C vents behind the bedroom at night to get max airflow out of the 2 vents in the BR. It gets cool enough that we put on the covers during the night. It is wired for the 2nd A/C and we considered having one installed when we bought it but decided to go a summer and see how it worked...so far, so good. YMMV.

Just to expound on my previous comment; we spent a lot of time in FL. We do not like sleeping while sweating and we don't like sitting around sweating...even a little sheen. Winter or summer, for us, 2 ACs is mandatory and we wouldn't go without them. Another thought is the humidity, which is very high much of the time. In addition to the 2 ACs we always carry a compressor type dehumidifier to draw down some of the moisture. We don't leave home without it.
