US-199 Grants Pass to Crescent city
Hello,
We want to take a trip to see the redwoods this summer, I booked a KOA in crescent city.
We'll be traveling from Salt Lake City, Utah.
Looking at the map, the one stretch I'm concerned about is US-199 from Grants Pass to Crescent city.
Is this doable with a F350 crew cab long bed and a 38ft 5th wheel(Cougar 336BHS).
I do have experience towing in canyons, being from Colorado and living in Utah

I have traveled that route a lot over the years. Towing and empty, I don't believe you will have any problems. I lived in central Oregon and worked falling timber along the coast several years. Drove it every weekend. Enjoy the spectacular scenery. There are some inclines and some switchbacks, but it is a main highway and fairly wide. Drive safe.

I drive that road a lot and there is only one really narrow area about 1/4 mile if you stay in your lane there should be no problem the spot is east of Patrick's Creek lodge, I have no problems with my GMC 3500 4 dr. short bed and my 2019 Cougar fifth wheel 315 RLS.

Sounds like a fun trip, Daniel. Just a heads up though. I hauled a couple loads of lumber a few years back to Scotia, California which is south from Crescent City on 101. If you're going to the redwoods, I assume you'll be taking that route. Somewhere through there is a very narrow windy goat trail where you go around blind corners. I had to get into the oncoming lane to get around them. Of course, that was pulling a 48 ft. trailer. But maybe Bob could enlighten you as to where that spot is. I can't remember exactly.

Just did 199 from coast to I5 a few months ago. Lots of hills, curves, etc. Slow and steady, pull over for others to pass. Not the easiest drive towing.

We did that route with our TT last spring and was happy to not have the 39' 5th wheel behind us. I use to fly over the route in my 67 SS 350 Camaro back in the late 60's
126 and 38 are better routes from I-5 to 101.

Doesn't look too bad on google maps. I did 299 from Redding to 101 once thought I was going to wear out the steering wheel.

That is a major route for the semis and lumber trucks to and from the coast. All of them are longer than your RV. You just have to pay attention to the road.

Traveled that route last year. Good road. You won't have any problems.

Don't do this!
299 should be no problem.
But if you get south of Eureka and want to head east, DO NOT take Hwy 36 from Fortuna to Red Bluff!
It is 142 miles of curves, elevation, and general mayhem for someone towing.
It's fantastic in a sports car or motorcycle, but not towing.
Just go to YouTube and put in Hwy 36 and you will see what I'm talking about.
It is truly epic on a good motorcycle or sports car!

New Frontier RV park in Winnemucca & the casino RV park in Coos Bay, can't recall the name, are both very nice parks.

There are a few places where the redwoods are right at the edge of the pavement, so you need to avoid scraping the side of the trailer on them and a couple of sharp corners require going into the other lane a bit.

It's a beautiful ride for sure. Just take your turns wide some of the Redwoods are very close to the road and little shoulder.

Be Careful
I too drove this with a Ford F-350 SRW pulling a 36 ft Montana 3100RL. Just be careful and take your time. The road is mostly 2 lane and the sequoias literally bump up against the asphalt in a lot of places. No shoulder at all in some places. Beautiful drive (or so I'm told), I had to really focus on the road, trees, and traffic to keep from hitting something. Just stay focused and you'll be fine. I'm not trying to scare you, just want you to be aware of what it's like. Have fun!

I did it in 2013 with a 2006 Crew Cab F-250 SRW towing a 38 foot Copper Canyon 5th wheel. As long as you are smart about it and take your time you'll be fine. Definitely was not the worst part of our cross country adventure.
And the Redwoods are truly amazing. You won't be disappointed.

Well, just learning to drive our 1st 5'er. 34.5' long on a Ram crew cab long bed. Bought in Grants Pass and took it home to Brookings on 199. No problems going west. Many tight turns and narrow sections, but the cliff is well back from the road. On the other hand, pulling the trailer back up (east) is a little more tricky. No problems, but the guard rail is right on the fog line in several areas of tight turns. I'm reasonably sure the trailer crossed the center line in places, but I couldn't take my eyes from the road to see.
That road has a bad reputation locally. Some say it is one of the most dangerous in the US, but I haven't verified. I can tell you that there are fatalities on 199 very regularly. Trouble spots seem to include Selma, Gasquet and Hiouchi where there tend to be multi-vehicle collisions, and the tight narrow sections where vehicles end up in the river with disconcerting regularity.
IMHO, take it with care and you will be fine, but you did well to ask.

We did that same trip last year and can't stop talking about the great country we traveled thru. We did SLC to Winnemucca (great RV Park on the east side of town next to Wingers restaurant, new and very clean and great on pricing). We left Winnemucca and traveled to Redding via Susanville. Then up 101 to Klamath Falls. After that Coos Bay, Depoe Bay and Cannon city. Best trip ever. Enjoy the Redwoods and the groves of trees. Give yourself plenty of time, for us it was three weeks. Towing a 26BH with a Ford F150. No troubles at all. Just some windy roads. Enjoy
